梁武帝时期国师志公禅师的故事

　　我国 古 代 梁 武 帝 时, 观 世音 菩 萨 就 现 过 志 公 禅师——出家的比丘相, 为梁武帝说法。 梁武帝一直奉志公禅师为国师, 他想雕一尊志公禅师的像作供养, 请了天下最好的雕刻工匠也雕不好。 一次梁武帝和志公禅师站在江边, 远远看到江上漂来一根木头, 志公禅师就跟梁武帝说: 你把这根木头捞起来可以雕我的像。 这是一根檀木, 发出幽幽的檀香。 雕像师以志公禅师为模特,在雕刻时总觉得禅师的模样一直在变, 就求志公禅师说: 禅师, 您能不能不要动啊? 我雕您的时候怎么好像样子又变了, 您的样子能不能不变啊? 结果志公禅师就现出了观世音菩萨相, 放大光明! 雕刻匠顷刻之间下刀如有神助, 不长时间就把像雕成了, 像雕好了, 志公禅师也入灭了。

Eternal （Lecture on the Guan Yin Bodhisattva Universal Door）（54）

During the time of Emperor Wu of Liang Dynasty inancient China, Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva appeared as the Zen monk Master Bao Zhito teach the Emperor Dharma. Zen Master Bao Zhi was honoured as the master ofthe Empire. The Emperor wanted to make a sculpture of the master to worship,but even the world’s best sculptor failed to carve a satisfactoryone. Once the Emperor and the master stood beside the bank of a river where a piece of wood was floating from afar. The master told the Emperor: you can use thiswood to make a sculpture of me. It was a piece of sandalwood emitting a nicefragrance. A sculptor started to work and took the master as the model.However, he found that the master’s face was constantly changing. Herequested the master to retain the same appearance. Then the master appeared asGuan Shi Yin Bodhisattva who emitted dazzling light. Shortly afterwards, thesculptor successfully made a sculpture as fine as if carved with the help ofthe gods. Upon completion of the sculpture, Zen Master Bao Zhientered Nirvana.
