Look up to the Good, and Turn away from the Bad

 A talk given by Master Yinguang

无论在家出家，必须上敬下和，忍人所不能忍，行人所不能行，代人之劳，成人之美。静坐常思己过，闲谈不论人非。

Should it be at home as laypersons or in a monastery as monastics, we must be respectful to the seniors and caring and loving to the juniors, enduring all the unendurable, practicing all the impossible, taking on the backbreaking for others and contributing to the fulfillment of others. In retreat, reflect upon our own misconducts; in communication, never talk about others’ faults.

行住坐卧，穿衣吃饭，从朝至暮，从暮至朝，一句佛号，不令间断，或小声念，或默念，除念佛外，不起别念；若或妄念一起，当下就要教他消灭。

From dawn till dusk, dusk till dawn, whether we are in motion or in stillness, at a meal or in a course of getting dressed, be mindful of the Buddha’s name, continuously, without a break, reciting in a low voice or in silence, single-mindedly, allowing no other thoughts arising. The moment delusive thoughts arise, eliminate them in no time.

常生惭愧心及忏悔心，纵有修持，总觉我工夫很浅，不自矜夸。只管自家，不管人家。只看好样子，不看坏样子；看一切人都是菩萨，唯我一人实是凡夫。果能依我所说修行，决定可生西方极乐世界......

Constantly give rise to a mind of shame, remorse, repentance and reform. Even if we are well cultivated, we should stay humble, feeling that we are at an entry-level of cultivation. Look inward rather than look out, look up to the good and turn away from the bad. Regard all the other people as bodhisattvas while take ‘I’ myself as a mere mortal being. Only if we practice according to what’s been said here, we are bound to be reborn in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss.

“Viendo Solo lo Bueno, No lo Malo”

Ya sea que vivas en casa o hayas renunciado a la vida mundana, debes respetar a los superiores y ser armónico con los inferiores. Soporta lo que otros no pueden soportar, haz lo que otros no pueden hacer. Asume las cargas de los demás y ayúdalos a tener éxito. Cuando estés sentado en silencio, reflexiona siempre sobre tus propios errores; en conversaciones ociosas, no hables de los defectos de los demás.

Ya sea caminando, de pie, sentado o acostado, al vestirte o comer, desde la mañana hasta la noche, desde la noche hasta la mañana, recita el nombre de Buda sin interrupción. Recita ya sea suavemente o en silencio. Aparte de recitar el nombre de Buda, no dejes que surjan otros pensamientos; si surge un pensamiento errante, hazlo desaparecer inmediatamente.

Mantén siempre un corazón de vergüenza y arrepentimiento. Incluso si practicas el cultivo espiritual, siente siempre que tus esfuerzos son superficiales y no te jactes. Ocúpate solo de tus propios asuntos, no de los de los demás. Ve solo los buenos ejemplos, no los malos; considera a todas las personas como bodhisattvas, mientras te consideras a ti mismo como un ser ordinario. Si puedes practicar de acuerdo con lo que he dicho, ciertamente renacerás en la Tierra Pura Occidental de la Máxima Felicidad.

ไม่ว่าจะอยู่ในครอบครัวหรือบวช,

ต้องมีความเคารพและสามัคคี,

อดทนต่อสิ่งที่คนอื่นทนไม่ได้,

กระทำสิ่งที่คนอื่นทำไม่ได้,

ทำงานแทนผู้อื่น,

สร้างความงามให้กับผู้อื่น

นั่งสมาธิและตระหนักถึงข้อบกพร่องของตัวเองเสมอ,

อย่าพูดคุยเรื่องร้ายของผู้อื่นเมื่อว่าง

ทำกิจวัตรประจำวัน,

สวมใส่เสื้อผ้า,

รับประทานอาหาร,

ตั้งแต่เช้าจรดเย็น,

ตั้งแต่เย็นจนถึงเช้า,

อย่าหยุดสวดมนต์พระนามพระพุทธเจ้า

พูดเบาๆ หรือในใจ,

นอกจากการนึกถึงพระแล้ว,

ไม่คิดเรื่องอื่น;

หากมีความคิดที่ผิดปรากฏขึ้น,

ต้องทำให้มันหมดไปทันที

ไม่หยิ่งผยอง เพียงแต่ดูแลตัวเอง,

ไม่ยุ่งเกี่ยวกับผู้อื่น มองเห็นแต่ด้านดี,

ไม่มองด้านไม่ดี;
