Eternal (Lecture on the Guan Yin Bodhisattva Universal Door)(67)
By Master Chuanxi
Aksayamati Bodhisattva said to the Buddha, ‘World-Honored One, I shall make offerings to Guan Yin Bodhisattva now. Then he took a necklace adorned with numerous precious gems, worth a hundred or a thousand taels of gold from his neck, and presented it to Guan Yin Bodhisattva, saying, ‘My venerable Sir, please accept this necklace of precious gems as an offering of Dharma.’ Guan Yin Bodhisattva was unwilling to accept it at that time. Aksayamati Bodhisattva said to Guan Yin Bodhisattva again, ‘My venerable Sir, please pity us and accept this necklace of precious gems.’
As soon as the Buddha taught us that we should worship Guan Yin Bodhisattva wholeheartedly, Aksayamati Bodhisattva generously offered his luxurious necklace made of precious stones that he wore around his neck to Guan Yin Bodhisattva. Why is this kind of offering called the offering of Dharma? Because it is a practice done in respect to the Dharma. However, Guan Yin Bodhisattva was unwilling to accept it. Aksayamati Bodhisattva then said to Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva again, ‘My venerable Sir, please pity us and accept this necklace of precious gems.’ Aksayamati has changed his wording. Earlier, he was saying it was his offering of Dharma which is a kind of practice in which the giver, the taker and the item being offered are all empty. Therefore,it is called the offering of Dharma. Now, he hopes the Bodhisattva can have mercy on them and take the necklace so that they are able to create a connection with Him. The reason why Guan Yin Bodhisattva didn’t accept the necklace was not because He was ignorant. but because the Buddha was around. This is like when a child with good manners is offered a candy and wants to take it, but because his parents are there, he will not take unless he has the permission of his parents. All these showed Guan Shi Yin’s respect to the Buddha, and at the same time it was also demonstrating that Aksayamati Bodhisattva’s offering became more in accordance with Dharma now.
