长者有十种德: 一姓贵, 二位高, 三大福, 四威猛, 五智深, 六年高, 七行净, 八理备, 九上叹, 十下归。 长者不是一般人, 大家都尊崇他, 像孔夫子即具长者德, 后来被尊称为圣人。 为了度这样的人, 观音菩萨就现长者身给他说法, 说爱人利物, 说修身、 齐家、 治国之法。
Eternal （Lecture on the Guan Yin Bodhisattva Universal Door）（49）
If there are sentient beings who need someone in the body of a noble man in order to be saved, then Guan Yin Bodhisattva will manifest Himself in the body of a noble man to preach the Dharma for them.
A noble man has ten virtues: a superior family background, high status, great blessedness, mightiness, profound wisdom, a long lifespan, pure deeds, good discipline and morality, acclaimed from those with a higher status, and respect and obedience by those with a lower status. A noble man is not an ordinary person but someone who is respected by everyone such as Confucius who possessed ten virtues and was later respected as a saint. In order to save people with similar virtues, Guan Yin Bodhisattva will manifest Himself in the body of a noble man to preach the Dharma for him, teach him benevolence and how to benefit others, as well as methods of achieving self-cultivation, family harmony and ruling of a country.
