El radical exterior de esta palabra "Precepto" representa a un soldado que guarda su puesto con un arma en la mano.  La única horizontal con dos trazos verticales representa una barricada que advierte a uno que se detenga en seco.  Manejar la barricada para evitar que ocurran accidentes, es un acto de vigilancia.  Por lo tanto, nuestra defensa de los preceptos demuestra la sabiduría de protegernos a nosotros mismos mediante mecanismos de defensa y no lastimar a los demás.

“계(戒）”자는 밖에 무기를 들고 보초 서는 사병을 상징하는 “戈”자가 있고 안에 일”一” 이”|”은 행진을 막는 바리케이드를 상징한다.예측하지 못한 사고를 방비하도록 무기를 들고 바리케이드 설치하는 것은 일종의 경계 자세다. 그래서 수계는 경계를 통해서 자기 자신을 보호하여 남을 해치지 않는 지혜이리라.
