The Thus Come One was born in this world to preach and pass down all the wonderful Dharma. Over ten thousand years, anyone who takes refuge in the Three Jewels, becomes Sangha for practice, or listens to the preaching or even the name of a Buddha or Bodhisattva, has sowed the seed towards becoming a Buddha. Our listening to the teaching now is also the cause of being a Buddha. The Lotus Sutra exposes the nature of the three Vehicles and reveals the ultimate truth of the one-vehicle method, as well as the phenomenal deeds and fundamental nature of Buddha. It is a genuine sutra containing the teaching of the whole truth. If the deeds of Buddha are ripples generated by a stone thrown into water, then the nature of Buddha is the water. Although expedient means are convenient for beings to understand, they do not reveal the perfect approach of becoming a Buddha. In this Lotus Sutra, the Buddha does not preach expedient means but reveals the ultimate and supreme Dharma which allows beings to become a Buddha. Therefore, this sutra is considered as ‘the King of Sutras’.
The Sutra says, ‘Even if one offers a flower to a portrait with a distracted mind, they will be able to gradually see numerous Buddhas over time.’ Firstly we should create connections with Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Even if you only offer a flower to a portrait of a Buddha or Bodhisattva with a distracted mind, the connection is created. This connection allows you to see numerous Buddhas gradually, to practice according to their teachings and Dharma, and eventually to become a Buddha. ‘If someone bows to worship, or even with their palms pressed together, or raises a single hand, or gives a slight nod of head, to make an offering to the Buddha portrait, they will be able to see countless Buddhas. Through this, they will eventually attain supreme enlightenment; help numerous sentient beings to liberate themselves from Samsara and to enter supreme Nirvana, as when a fire becomes extinguished when the firewood is exhausted.’
We are able to set other beings free from Samsara after we’ve become a Buddha. What is the cause of this? The cause may originate from the person who has led you to this Guan Yin Pavilion. Here you see the portraits and statues of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and thus feel joyful. You have joined your palms together, bowed to worship, or lit an incense stick, by which a seed of liberation is sown in front of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Thereafter, you will be able to gradually see Buddhas and Sangha, and then have a chance to study Dharma and eventually attain Buddhahood. This is how the cause develops step-by-step.
