《永恒的甘露》--《妙法莲华经—普门品》讲记(二十三) 传喜法师宣讲

  【若复有人,临当被害,称观世音菩萨名者,彼所执刀杖,寻段段坏,而得解脱。】北宋时, 钱塘 (杭州) 有一个姓王的税收官, 为人生性善良, 看到动物被杀, 不忍心, 就花钱把它买下来, 为此祂甚至动用国家的税钱, 去买这些东西来放生。后来被人告发, 一查确有此事, 判了个杀头问斩的罪。有人替祂惋惜, 祂却说: 我救了这么多的生命, 死我一个有什么怕的? 祂心里正念分明。临到问斩时,刽子手一刀劈下去砍在脖子上, 刀一下子断成三截。监斩官一看这个情形, 连忙汇报给皇帝。皇帝细心一打听,确确实实这些钱都是拿去放生的, 就免了祂的死刑, 还给祂官复原职。可是祂却不要做官, 出家修道去了。祂就是赫赫有名的净土六祖—— —永明延寿大师, 杭州净慈寺的。 这就是 “ 若复有人,临当被害,称观世音菩萨名者,彼所执刀杖,寻段段坏,而得解脱” 。

  为什么会这样的呢? 《楞严经》 里从因上讲叫 “刀兵无畏”, 观世音菩萨在因地修行 “ 熏闻成闻,六根销复,同于声听,能令众生,临当被害,刀段段坏,使其兵戈,犹如割水,亦如吹光,性无摇动” 。“熏闻成闻” 者, 这是以反闻闻自性的功夫, 念念入流, 熏彼寻尘之妄闻转成真闻, 一根返源, 六根同时消妄复真, 同于声尘听闻之性, 一一复归元真, 至此则尘亡根尽, 亲证不动不坏之体。 这就是观世音菩萨因地修行,亲证不动不坏的体性, 下与六道众生同一悲仰, 不令被害, 刀段段坏, 纵使不坏亦如刀割流水, 风吹日光, 了无痕迹, 亦无损已。

When someone is about to be harmed, if he chants the name of Guan Yin Bodhisattva, the knives and sticks held by the others will be broken into pieces; and he will be free from danger.During the North Song Dynasty, there was a tax official whose surname was Wang in Qiantang, Hangzhou city. He was very kind-hearted and couldn’t bear to see any animals being killed, so he spent his own money and even the tax funds of the state to purchase the animals and then released them. Later, he was reported by someone to the government and was sentenced to death after an investigation. Some people sympathized with him, but he said: “I have saved so many lives. What is to be scared of if I lose my life? He knew clearly what he was doing was right. When he was about to be beheaded, the executioner dropped the guillotine on his neck. However, the guillotine broke into three pieces. The executioner reported to the Emperor what had happened. The Emperor enquired the details of Wang’s case and found that all the money he took from the state was indeed for saving lives. So the Emperor not only pardoned him but also restored him to his former official position. However, he did not want to be an official anymore and decided to become a monk. He was the famous Sixth Patriarch of the Pure Land School, Master Yongming Yanshou. He practiced at Jingci Temple in Hangzhou. This story proves that ‘when someone is about to be harmed, if he chants the name of Guan Yin Bodhisattva, the knives and sticks held by the others will be broken into pieces, and he will be free from danger. How could this happen? In the Shurangama Sutra, this is so-called ‘fearlessness against knives and weapons’ from the aspect of cause.

Guan Yin Bodhisattva practised at the cause ground, ‘I was permeated with hearing, and eventually with the genuine hearing nature recovered; then all six roots were dissolved and their genuine nature as hearing has also been recovered. I can make the knives break into pieces and make the weapons have no effect; as if they were cutting through water or as if one blows upon light, and nothing happens’. By hearing and contemplating upon self-nature, and making each thought ‘enter theflow’, Guan Yin Bodhisattva transformed the hearing of the illusory of external sounds and noices into genuine hearing. When the nature of one root has been recovered, all the other six roots will dissolve and their nature will be restored. Then both the external influences and the roots will be eliminated and the non-moving and indestructible body will be attained. This was the practice of Guan Yin Bodhisattva at the cause ground; He attained a body of neither non-movement nor destructible. He offers His compassion to all sentient beings in the six realms, protecting them from being harmed. If they are cut by knives, the Bodhisattva will break the knives into pieces; or render them harmless as if they are cutting flowing water, or as if they are blowing upon sunlight, in which case there is neither trace of this phenomenon nor any harm produced.
