Eternal (Lecture on the Guan Yin Bodhisattva Universal Door)(22)
By Master Chuanxi
The main purpose of studying Dharma is to put it into use in our daily life. In order to make a living, we have to find jobs. If the jobs are not satisfying, then won’t we be annoyed? Lots of factories go bankrupt as a result of corruption of people in different positions with some power. State-owned assets are taken by them. This phenomenon turns factories into the Rakshashas’ country. Those greedy people feed themselves with the workers’ sweat and blood. The retired workers even can not get their pensions. Some of them have worked for over thirty or forty years. However, when they retire, the factories are at the edge of bankruptcy, so they are dismissed with only several thousand Yuan.
If our mind is as turbid as the external world, we will drift into the ’Rakshasas’ country. Due to our greed, we pursue something bad. If you pursue something good, for instance, you pursue real liberation, praying to enter into the sea of all Buddha and Bodhisattavas’ vows, instead of being cast into Rasksasas’ country, you will be reborn into the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and Joy. Therefore, if youfollow the teachings of the Buddha, the whole of your family will benefit as well. This is also true for a company. We need to guide our life with wisdom. We are not saying that we cannot pursue worldly fortunes, but that we should pursue it in the right way. If wrong direction is taken, we will suffer from all sorts of disasters that we invite. Where do floods, fires, and storms come from? They are invited in by the greed of our eyes, ears and minds.
My master, the Venerable Master Wu Dao, taught us that monks should not indulge their eyes, ears, and mind. Closing these three ‘doors’ is the first step to the practice of Dharma. A practitioner should take good care of his eyes, ears, and mind. As long as we contemplate inwardly upon our self-nature, within which there is Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva, we will be blessed and protected by the power of His compassion and mercy if we pray to Him sincerely. That is why Buddha says, this is how Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva got his name.
