Let us chant once: Namo Buddha Amitabha! Let there be no ill-fate, misfortune, sickness and suffering in life. What happens eventually is that finally,  everyone goes directly the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.This is a kind of aspiration and hope for me.Including myself personally.

When we are on the path of the Dharma, we seek the Dharma. When we are on the path of wisdom, we seek wisdom. When we are on the path of emancipation, we seek emancipation. The Dharma is the study of wisdom.The world is about the study of the truth. And the fourfold assembly talk about the study of morality. The Dharma is the study of wisdom. This is because they all are. This time, Master Hai Tao is here after having been in Hong Kong to spread the Dharma; it is a rare opportunity. There has to be a karmic connection for people to meet. O…it is not easy and very hard to come by. Something which is rare.

The Elderly Master Yin Guang said,

‘Our Buddha opened up eighty thousand gates,this mindfulness of the Buddha alone is the most exalted.’  ‘The moon on a thousand rivers is the moon in the sky, The wind in the valley is the wind on the head of the dragon.’ This is to say that the Dharma is part seeding, part fruition,  and part emancipation, the triad of seeding, fruition, and emancipation. Everything is in accord with this. When a seed had been planted long ago, fruition occurred in the past,  and emancipation will happen in the present. If you had planted the seed in the past, fruition will happen in the present, and emancipation will occur in the future.

We must first plant the seed. Bodhisattva Maitreya employs an expedient and skilful method to teach the Dharma without speaking any words. ‘Sowing the field of merits with green seedlings in hand, One sees the sky in the water once he lowers his head. The Path is reached with the six roots (senses) being clear and unadulterated, One is actually moving forward although he is in retreat.’ Oh, these four sentences! It is in accord with principle as well as phenomena. With regard to the appearance of phenomena, on the field that the Cloth-bag Monk tilled, weed did not grow, and the water did not dry up. Harvest was possible. With regard to principle, it is different. This is the hand of faith. Faith is the origin of the Path and the progenitor of merits and virtues. It forever nourishes every wholesome root there is. We should begin by faith. And we should also let go.

First, we have to view with non-attachment each and everything in the world. After we view with non-attachment, we can let go. After we have let go, we can be free. After we are free, then can we be emancipated. Bodhisattva Maitreya also said that encouraging a person to practise is better than being diligent on our own.  To encourage more than ten, the blessings and virtues will already be boundless. To encourage hundreds or even thousands, one is a living bodhisattva in this world. To encourage more than ten thousand, one is Amitabha. Therefore, encouragement is extremely important.  People need to be encouraged, and drums beaten. A drum would not sound if it is not beaten, and a person would not be wholesome if he is not encouraged.

Those of us who are present here –everyone of you with wholesome knowledge -are in actual fact, mostly vegetarian. To be able to be good in mindfulness of the Buddha, we will need encouragement. The power of encouragement should not be under-estimated. Buddha Amitabha transformed into a monastic to teach the Dharma. And that monastic was the monk Shan Dao. He is also a Pure Land patriarch. How did he put it?‘Gradually, one’s skin is like the chicken’s and hair like the crane’s. Take a look at how one walks in a decrepit way. Even though one has many descendants enough to fill a hall, one cannot be spared decline, incapacitation, old age and sickness. You may be happy in a thousand ways, impermanence will still finally be upon you. The only path is practice. And that is none other than the mindfulness of Buddha Amitabha.’ 

And Buddha Amitabha also transformed into the Zen Master Yong Ming Yan Shou. He advised us, in the Record of the Axiom Mirror in 100 fascicles - these four sentences were spoken by him personally - ‘When the mind thinks, one is only thinking on his own. When the mind thinks, one is only asking for suffering. Whenever there is thinking, one will not eventually realize.Once thinking has been rested, one will then be able to see the Path.’

As such, we have to work hard. We have to rest our mind and be mindful of the Buddha.  As long as the mind is not rested, the mind will not be pure and unadulterated. A one-pointed pure and unadulterated mind is the mark of a Dharma King.
