在费尔南迪纳岛，一只小蜥蜴破壳而出。世界送给它的第一个拥抱，就是一群毒蛇的追杀。

In Fernandina Island, a small iguana hatched out of its shell. The world gave it its first hug, and that is to run for its life with a swarm of poisonous snakes in hot pursuit.

惊险程度堪比好莱坞动作片的场景，是无数野生动物的日常。为了生存，它们在捕猎与逃亡、屠夫与食物的身份间来回切换。经过仔细的观察与分析，著名生物学家达尔文，总结出“弱肉强食”这一丛林法则。

As thrilling as those action scenes from a Hollywood blockbuster, this marks the daily lives of countless wild life animals. For the sake of surviving, they have to hunt and escape; identities as a butcher or becoming food simply take place interchangeably. After careful observation & analysis, renowned biologist Darwin summarized the law of the jungle using this phrase: “Survival of the fittest.”

食物链

The food-chain

食草动物从植物获取能量，食肉动物从其它生命获取能量，这是唯物世界观认为的食物链的一种关系。人类自诩为地球上的高级动物，也不出于此。“民以食为天”，人类与动物还存有这样的共性。

The herbivorous get their energy from consuming plants while the carnivorous get their energy from consuming other lives. The relationship in such food chain has been presumed by this materialistic world.

As such, the human race proclaimed themselves as the far superior animal. Yet there is still something in common between the human race & the animals, that is “Eat to live”.

无论是狮群与野牛的生死角斗，还是美洲豹一口咬碎凯门鳄的枕骨，这些画面虽触目惊心，但人们早已习以为常。弱肉强食，适者生存，何罪之有？

Regardless of whether it is a death match between the lion prides and bison, or the jaguar sinking its teeth into the skull of the Caiman crocodilian, while such scenes are ghastly, people have long grown accustomed to them. Survival of the fittest where the strongest survive – is there any wrong in this?

更有人将“弱肉强食”等概念引入社会学，把生存竞争定义为人类发展的规律，创立了崇尚强权与利己的“社会达尔文主义”。

There are even people who actually introduce this “Survival of the fittest” concept into sociology, imposing such survival competition as the norm for human progression, creating the advocation for power and self-interest – “Social Darwinism.”

这就是世界的真相吗？

Is this the truth of this world?

三千多年前的王耕节上，年仅七岁的悉达多太子对此产生了极大的怀疑。他看到人打着牛，牛翻起土地，鸟飞过来寻找深埋在土地中的小动物，老鹰捕捉着鸟。他的心中生起一种悲哀，他看到了这种食物链关系的局限性和不合理性。

At the sowing festival over three thousand years ago, seven-year-old Prince Siddhārtha cast great doubts over the scenes he saw. He saw men whipping oxen, oxen ploughing lands, birds swooping down on small insects deep in the earth, the eagle hunting after the bird. Sadness filled his mind as he saw through the limitations and irrationality of such ecological food chain.

天地间有没有更好的生存之道呢？

Is there a better way of survival in this world?

食物仅仅是能源的载体

Food is merely a carrier of energy

草原的大雪覆盖了地表所有的食物。为了能熬过这个寒冬，野牛依靠蛮力，用粗壮的颈部扫开积雪，寻找枯草。北美红狐更擅长利用敏锐的听觉与灵巧的身姿，一举捕获雪堆下的猎物。

The snow on the grassland has had all food completely covered. In order to make it through this harsh winter, the ox can only rely on its brute force to look for withered grass by shoving the snow aside with its strong neck. The North American red fox does better with its acute sense of hearing and agile frame, capturing preys underneath the snow with just a single strike.

无论植物也好，动物也好，它们都处于低级的食物链关系里，食物对它们而言，仅仅是为了补充自己的身体能源。但它们还无法领悟到这一点，无法领悟到食物仅仅是能源的载体，不是能源的本体。如果找到了能源的本体，就可以超越能源的载体，直接链接。

Regardless of plants or animals, they are caught in this low-level food chain. Food, to them, is merely a form of energy replenishment for their own bodies. However, they are unable to comprehend this, and that food is merely a carrier of energy, and not energy itself. Should energy itself be found, the carrier of energy can then be bypassed to make a direct connection instead.

其实，能源的本体遍及万物，泽被着每一个生灵。野牛、赤狐虽然不知其所在，却享受着它的恩泽。

In actual fact, energy itself exists in all things, benefitting each and every living soul. While the ox and red fox are not aware of this, they are actually reaping such benefits.

寻找宇宙能量之源

向内开发

Look from within

佛陀出家以后，对这一生命课题更是亲身实践，用六年的苦行，超越对食物的依赖。

After Buddha became a monk, he took the subject of life into his own practice. After six years of ascetic life, he surpassed the reliance on food.

既然一切生命皆以食物为生，佛陀就从根本上来看，他依靠的能量到底是什么。他放弃了低级食物链的能量索取，向内开发，去寻找宇宙能量之源，为一切众生开辟高级食物链的大道。

The reliance on food by all forms of life prompted Buddha to look at this fundamentally. What exactly was the energy that he relied on? He gave up getting energy from the low-level food chain, looking for the source of universe’s energy from within self, paving the great way to a high-level food chain for all sentient beings.

中国讲“人天相应，人天合一”，这时候，佛陀已经找到了作为生命、作为人类最有尊严的生命模式，能够自给自足。

The Chinese has this saying: “The correspondence between man and universe, the unification of man and universe.” At this point in time, Buddha had already found the most dignified mode of living for life itself and for the human race, a mode of self-sufficient.

一切众生皆具如来智慧徳相

All sentient beings possess the wisdom and virtues of the Tathagata

不来亦不去

Neither coming in nor going out of existence

“生活从没有容易二字”，无论人类还是动物，想必对此都深有感慨。承担养家重任的企鹅父亲，在惊涛拍岸的海水里艰难觅食，用弱小的身躯抗衡险恶的环境，甚至不惜付出生命的代价。

“Nothing ever comes easy in life”, whether it refers to the human race or the animals, this must have been a heartfelt phrase for them. Shouldering the responsibility of looking after the family, the penguin father struggles to look for food amidst the stormy waves at sea, contending the perilous conditions with its fragile body, so much so that it will not hesitate to pay for the price with its own life.

现实的生存问题如同难解的斯芬克斯之谜，让无数众生身心交瘁，为此付出一生。

The reality of survivorship remains as enigmatic as the mystery of the sphinx. As a result, countless sentient beings are subjected to physical and mental exhaustion for their entire lives.

佛陀对真理的体悟，却打开了宇宙能量本源的闸门。让我们能够超越生活的苟且，走向诗和远方。

Buddha’s realisation of the Truth opened the gateway to the source of the universe’s energy.

With this, we can then surpass the perfunctory life and head towards the ideal way of living.

远方不远，就在当下，就在大道中。僧人用斋前念诵的“若饭食时，当愿众生，禅悦为食，法喜充满”，揭示的正是此中奥妙。

Such ideal way is not far away, it lies within the present, lies within the great Way. Sanghas recite this prior to mealtime: “As this meal lies before us, we make a vow for all sentient beings, to take the Zen bliss as food, and be filled with Dharma joy,” bringing to light the profoundness which lies within.

食物滋养我们的色身，那什么能滋养我们的法身慧命呢？这个能量体系是不能够被忘掉的。

While food nourishes our physical body, what nourishes our Dharmakaya (Spiritual, the true body) and provides wisdom of life? Such energy system should not be forgotten.

一切众生皆具如来智慧徳相，也就是说，一切众生阿耨多罗三藐三菩提的本来面貌都是存在的，它朗朗不动地在那里，不来亦不去。

All sentient beings possess the wisdom and virtues of the Tathagata, meaning to say, all sentient beings possess the original anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (the universal supreme wisdom and realization), it has been there all the while, neither coming in nor going out of existence.

道德本身就是饭

Morals and virtues are rice by itself

因果

Cause and effect

就算是对于位居食物链高端的肉食者而言，生活也不尽如意。不仅因为食物的获取充满艰辛，而且在因果面前，杀害生命的恶行终将形成一股反作用力，冲击在自己身上。

Even to the carnivorous who rank at the top of the food chain, life is not all smooth sailing. Not only is it tiring for one to get food, in the face of cause and effect, the vicious act of killing creates a negative effect which will eventually bounce back to one self.

食草动物死后是不会下地狱的，但影片里的这只赤狐却会。这不是佛要惩罚它，也不是田鼠要报复它。这是它错误的果报，是它自己背离了“道”，背离了这个宇宙圆满的阿耨多罗三藐三菩提。

The herbivorous will not go to Hell after they die, but the red fox in this film will. This is not a punishment from Buddha, neither is it the revenge of the vole. This is the price it has to pay for its wrongful deed committed; it has deviated from the “Way”, deviated from the perfection of the universe’s anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (the universal supreme wisdom & realization).

赤狐能够抓到雪层下面的野鼠，它自认为很聪明，认为这才是它的本事，实际上它错了。

The red fox thinks that it is very smart as it is able to capture the vole underneath the snow, recognizing this as its ability. In actual fact, it is wrong.

我们老祖先有一句话，“一分奸巧一分穷，十分奸巧天不容”。奸巧、奸诈是最伤道德的。道德是什么？有人问：“讲道德能当饭吃吗？”道德不能当饭吃，道德本身就是饭。

Our ancestors have this saying: “A penny worth of scheming deed brings about a penny worth of poverty, a dime worth of scheming deeds shall not be tolerated by Heaven.” Scheming and craftiness bring about most harm to morals and virtues. What is moral and virtue? Someone asked this: “Can morals and virtues be consumed like rice?” While morals and virtues cannot be consumed like rice, morals and virtues are rice by itself.

体证宇宙本源的生命

original source of life

在寂静的深夜，群兽栖息，唯有丛林深处的蘑菇华丽生长。体证了宇宙本源的生命，就如这暗夜中的小小灯塔，无需外缘，自生光芒。有没有一架天梯，可以通往宇宙能量之源？

Deep into the quiet night, as all animals take their rest, only the mushrooms in the jungle continue to flourish and grow. Having experienced the universe’s original source of life, like this small little lighthouse set in the dark night, no external interferences are required, it shines on its own. Is there a stairway leading to the source of the universe’s energy?

实际上，宇宙中永恒的能量之源，佛陀已经为我们找到了。只是这个能量的获取需要我们有宁静的心灵，而这种宁静的心灵的智慧状态，要在甚深的禅定中才能体验得到。

In actual fact, Buddha has already found for us the eternal source of the universe’s energy, yet it takes one with a calm and peaceful soul to reap such energy, and such state of wisdom brought about by the calm and peaceful soul can only be experienced during deep meditation.

那禅定需要什么前提呢？

So, what is the prerequisite for meditation?

一是戒恶。不扰乱别人，不扰乱一切生命，自己也就不会被打扰，甚至能够获得安稳。

Firstly, stop committing evil or wrongful acts. One shall not be disturbed if one does not cause disturbance to others, does not cause disturbance to all forms of lives, and will even gain calmness in return.

二是修善。人人都喜欢你，那你无论到哪里都能与自己相处得好、与大家相处得好，你吃饭的时候是安心的，睡觉的时候也是安稳的。

Secondly, cultivate and accumulate kindness. If everyone likes you, you will be able to get along well with yourself and with everyone else, regardless of where you are. You get to eat with a peace of mind, and will be able to sleep calmly as well.

所谓戒、定、慧，戒恶修善是修定的前提，修定是开智慧的前提。这都是佛陀交给我们的阶梯，它是通往无漏的，所以戒定慧三学又叫三无漏学。

Precept, Samadhi and Wisdom: Quitting all evil acts while cultivating and accumulating kindness are the prerequisite for cultivating Samadhi, cultivating Samadhi is the prerequisite for gaining wisdom. These are all the steps passed down by Buddha, steps leading to the anasrava. Thus, the three studies of Precept, Samadhi and Wisdom are also termed as the Three Anasrava Studies.

文化、道德是高级的能量

Civilisation of the human race

文明是人类区别于动物的显著标志。但在社会达尔文主义的影响下，人类社会与自然界的这一本质差异，被“弱肉强食，适者生存”的思想所取代。

Civilisation marks the distinct characteristic of the human race from animals. However, under the influence of social Darwinism, this innate difference between the human society and natural world has been replaced by the “Survival of the fittest” concept.

文化、道德是高级的能量，是人类文明不可或缺的。如果无限地放大饮食的功用而不见文化的能量，人类文明就会倒退，就会进入到丛林式的、弱肉强食的状态。

Cultures and morals are top-notch energies that are crucial to the civilisation of the human race. Should the ability of eating be magnified indefinitely without sight of the energy of morals, human civilisation will then fall back to the jungle mode where the strongest survive.

而作为地球上最会思考的物种之一，如果连人类都失去了思考的能力，远离了道德的文化，那地球的命运就变得悲惨，整个循环系统就会退化。

And yet, should the human race, being one of the breeds with the highest thinking ability in this world, lose its ability to think and deviate from the moral culture, the fate of this world will turn pathetic while the entire cycling system deteriorates.

发掘自身永恒的宇宙本源

Finding the universe’s eternal source

within oneself

回归古老文明

Bringing back the ancient civilisation

我们亟需重新审视这个时代。现代化列车正急速向前，资源枯竭与道德沦丧却紧随其后。即使星际迁移梦想成真，对物质资源的过度依赖，依然是人类发展的一大阻碍。

We need to re-evaluate this era urgently. The modernised train speeds forward with resource depletion and moral bankruptcy following closely behind. Even if the dream of interstellar migration were to come true, the unduly reliance on material resources would still be the greatest obstruction to the development of the human race.

何不回归古老文明，发掘自身永恒的宇宙本源？在磅礴无碍的精神世界，做一个真正的富有者！

Why not bring back the ancient civilisation and look for the universe’s eternal source within oneself? In the boundless and free psychological world, be one who is truly wealthy!
