苦乐的根源
The Root of Suffering and Happiness
In The Sutra of Buddha's Bequeathed Teaching, it reads: “A content person feels happy even when he is lying on the ground, while those who are not content won’t feel satisfied even when living in Heaven.” A content person feels constant happiness. Happiness is not something that can be purchased with money. If one chases after wealth, considering the possession of great wealth as their ultimate goal, it will bring nothing but boundless negative emotions. Inner peace can never be achieved through material wealth. Restless heart will never rest with material wealth.
According to the Buddha’s teachings, all suffering stems from selfishness and all happiness stems from altruistic activities. This is the difference between acquiring suffering and acquiring happiness, between being bad and being good. People with selfish minds bring suffering not only to others but also upon themselves. People with altruistic minds bring happiness not only to others but also upon themselves.
When you give money to a beggar, who do you think has gained more? If he was given a pound, he may only buy a simple sandwich. However, your good intention is something that Heaven knows, the Earth knows, the gods know and your integrity knows – you have therefore benefited more from your kindness.
