现在是21世纪, 除了 “酒色财气” 四堵墙, 墙又多了, 比如电脑、手机都是墙。现在有个新名词叫“低头一族”。在场的诸位都没有手机, 但是你们看, 却有许多人现在就身处另一堵墙中, 这堵墙就是手机。他们被手机整得神魂颠倒, 连这个世界都跟着神魂颠倒。

In present 21st Century, there are additional walls beside alcohol, sensual pleasures, wealth and anger. Computer and handphones are walls too. They have given rise to a new word - ‘phubber’. Has everyone of you here got a handphone? Quite a number of you will realize that you have been blocked by another wall – your handphone. These people are being turned topsy-turvy by their phones and so is the whole world.


大家看, 现在除了酒色财气, 又多了电脑墙、手机墙, 那是不是手机地狱呀? 所以不管你在哪里, 都要有一个理性的驾驭、自我的驾驭,要学会管理好自身, 做到自我管理。所以佛说, 一个能够自我管理的人是最有力量的人。

We can all see that on top of alcohol, sensual pleasures, wealth and anger, there are the walls of the computer and the handphone. Is not the handphne hell? Therefore, you need to be in rational control of yourself no matter where you are. Rational self-control requires that you manage yourself well. That is why the Buddha said that he who governs himself well is the most powerful.

所以修行时有一句话, 叫做:“ 非王侯将相之所能为。” 为什么在中国古代, 天下百姓都给皇帝磕头, 但是皇帝给出家人磕头? 因为修行是一个并非王侯将相能够做的事情。王侯将相攻城略地, 征服别人, 征服后统治别人, 这是他的事情。修行的人是在征服自己、管理自己, 自己悟道了, 去开化别人, 救度众生。

That is also why Buddhist practice has been described as ‘that of which emperors and noblemen are not capable’. Why is it that in ancient times in China even emperors to whom the citizenry paid respects had to themselves pay respects to the monastics? That was because the Buddhist practice was something which no emperors and noblemen were capable of doing. Emperors, nobleman, generals and ministers specialize in the attack of cities and the invasion of lands – their business is to conquer others and then rule over them. The Buddhist practitioner conquers and manages himself – he strives, after having reached enlightenment himself, to edify and transform others in his bid to lead myriad beings to deliverance.


能够自我管理的人, 是世界上立于天地的人。这种人是贤人、是圣人。把握自己生命的正能量, 能自利利他, 让国泰民安, 让人民幸福。我们所谓的修身、齐家、治国、平天下, 是圣贤之道。

A person who can manage himself is one can have an upright footing in the world. Such is a virtuous and sagely person who uses his positivity to benefit himself as well as others so as to bring about peace to his country and happiness to his people. What we mean by ‘cultivating the self, running one’s family well, governing the state properly, and bringing peace to all under heaven’ refers to the path of the virtuous and sagely ones.

所以修行时

有一句话叫做

非王侯将相之所能为

齐国以前有一位名相:晏婴。他是我们本地人。咱们这里出了很多历史上的名人。这位名相, 孔夫子都钦佩他, 称他是“人中君子”。

There was once a famous minister, Yan-Yin, of the state of Qi who was also from Shandong, the birthplace of many historically well-known figures. Even Confucius admired this minister, whom he called ‘a noble man among men’.


孔夫子尊重晏婴是有原因的。他做宰相, 侍奉过三位齐侯:齐灵公、齐庄公、齐景公。第一位是齐灵公, 看重晏婴, 他驾崩后继位的是齐庄公, 上任后继续重用他。但是这位齐庄公要去跟别人打仗, 晏婴就向他进谏, 说这个仗不能打, 齐庄公不听, 晏婴就辞官, 回老家去了。结果齐庄公这一仗没打赢, 而且这位齐庄公缺乏自我管理能力, 荒淫无度, 被自己的大臣杀了。第三位是齐景公, 继位后又请晏婴出来做宰相, 帮助他治理国家。

There was a reason why Confucius showed respect to Yan-Yin. Yan-Yin had served as prime minister under three lords of Qi: Lords Qi-Ling, Qi-Zhuang and Qi-Jing. Lord QiLing had thought highly of Yan-Yin, and Lord Qi-Zhuang had continued to depend heavily on Yan-Yin when he took over the throne upon Lord Qi-Ling’s death. However, after Yan-Yin’s advice had fallen on deaf ears when he told Lord Qi-Zhuang not to wage a particular war, he resigned from his post and retired to his hometown. In the end, Lord Qi-Zhuang did not win that war and due to his incompetence in self-management, debauchery, and excess, he was killed by his own officials. When the third lord, Qi-Jing, ascended the throne, he invited Yan-Yin to be prime minister to help him in his rule.



有一年, 我们这个地方大涝, 连降大雨。过去的房子都是土房子, 雨太大, 房子倒了, 粮食被水冲走了。晏婴就去找齐侯, 请求开国库 放粮、赈灾。

Once, there was a big flood here as it had rained non-stop. As the houses in the past were made of mud, they had collapsed as a result, and food which had been stored was washed away. Upon learning this, Yan-Yin sought an audience with Lord Qi to request that the state food stores be utilised to help the people.


结果齐侯喝得醉醺醺的, 没理他。第二次晏婴再去, 他说百姓水深火热之中啊, 您怎么可以不管呢? 说完了之后把帽子一甩又辞职不干回家了。齐侯酒醒后, 特别后悔, 一路追, 追到晏婴的家。到了晏婴家之后, 发现晏婴把自己家所有吃的全部分给老百姓, 齐侯就向他道歉。他说自己会开仓放粮, 请晏婴赶快回来, 想办法处理灾情。后来国库大开, 赈灾放粮了。

However, Lord Qi was intoxicated from drinking too much and he ignored Yan-Yin. On his visit, Yan-Yin asked Lord Qi how he could have ignored the fact that the people were going through great suffering. As soon as he had speaken, he threw his headgear on the floor, offered his resignation and left for home. After he had gotten sober, Lord Qi was especially regretful and he gave chase to Yan-Yin all the way to his house. After he had reached Yan-Yin’s house and discovered that Yan-Yin had given all the food in his house away to the people, Lord Qi apologised to Yan-Yin. He assured Yan-Yin that he would distribute food from state storage to the people, and asked him to return immediately to the court so that he could help in dealing with the disaster. The state stores were then finally opened.

晏婴身为宰相, 他住的地方特别差, 房子也不大, 阴暗潮湿, 齐景公看了之后特别不忍心, 要给他盖新的, 晏婴不同意。齐景公就趁晏婴出使晋国的时候, 给他盖了新房子, 不料晏婴回来后竟然把新房子给拆了。因为他住在这个地方, 为的是体察民情, 知道天下人民的疾苦。

As prime minister, the house in which Yan-Yan stayed was especially run down. It was not big, and was dark and damp. Seeing that, Lord Qi-Jing felt particularly bad for him and offered to build him a new house; to which Yan-Yin rejected. Seizing the opportunity when Yan-Yin went on an official trip to the state of Jin, Lord Qi-Jing had a new house built for Yan-Yin. However, Yan-Yin had it torn down after he had returned from his trip. He had wanted, by living in such conditions, to understand what the people were going through.


晏婴有个做了三年的管家, 后来被他辞掉了。管家就问:“为什么辞我?” 晏婴说: “人非圣贤, 我不是圣贤, 我是有过错的。可是你跟我生活了三年, 没跟我提过意见, 没讲过我有哪些过错, 你不是我的好朋友, 所以我不要你了。”

A housekeeper who had been working for Yan-Yin for three years was one day asked by Yan-Yin to leave. The housekeeper asked, ‘Why did you terminate my service?’ Yan-Yin responded, ‘No one is perfect, and so am I not. I have faults. However, you have not raised any issues with me in the three years you have been with me to inform me of the things I have done wrong. You are not a good friend to me; and as such, I wish to terminate your service.’

大家看, 做君王也要有臣子能够告诉他是非曲直, 所以我们交朋友,不一定说要酒肉朋友一大群, 这种朋友, 他害你, 你都不知道, 我们做人, 脑子要清醒一点。就像前面讲过的, 抽烟不好, 抽烟死了那么多的人, 百万以上的人死亡。喝酒也是的, 喝酒一年也要至百万以上的人死亡。

So everyone can see that even lords and emperors need to have officials who can tell them where their faults lie. Therefore, we do not need to have too many friends, especially those who are only there to enjoy feasts and indulge in alcohol with you, for such friends can even bring you harm without you knowing. We need to be of clear mind. Like what we have mentioned previously, smoking is bad and it has caused millions of deaths. So is drinking which causes more than a million deaths annually. 


有位社会名人高晓松, 因为酒驾被抓, 关了半年, 对不对? 本来要做一档叫做《中国达人秀》的节目, 结果节目还没出来,他自己变成 “达人” 了。但是这个人, 我觉得他是位文化人, 有他的素质在, 宣判的时候, 法官问他: “你还要为自己辩护吗?” 他说: “我没有要辩护的,我要向全国人民道歉。”

Was not there a famous person – Gao Xiao-Song - who was caught drunk-driving and was jailed for half a year? He had originally been involved in the production of a TV program known as China’s Got Talent, but was himself made famous before the program was even out. I feel however, that he is a cultured person with certain fine traits because when he was being asked by the presiding judge for his defence, he said, ‘I do not intend to defend myself; I want to apologise to the entire country.’


因为他是名人, 名人应当要起表率作用。结果在这件事上, 他成了反面教材, 酒驾了、犯错了。他说我要向全国人民道歉, 而且酒没有好处, 我从今天起, 只要我活着, 我滴酒不沾, 向全国人民发誓。然后举起一块牌子, 写了四个字:“ 酒令智昏。” 酒能让我们大脑瞬间失去理智, 做出意想不到的傻事来。

As he is a famous personality, he had to assume the responsibility of being a role-model. Instead, with his drunk-driving, he had set a bad example. He had said that he wanted to apologise to every one of his countrymen, that no good would ever come out from alcohol consumption, and that he would make an oath to stay away from alcohol from that day on for as long as he would be living. After that, he displayed a placard with the characters to mean ‘alcohol confuses one’s rationality’ on it. Alcohol lets us lose our rationality in an instant such that we engage in silly acts we never expect ourselves to do.

我们在座的诸位听到高晓松这个故事, 是不是也有所感受? 我们以后要不要戒烟、要不要戒酒? 男子汉大丈夫烟酒都戒不掉,还被烟酒这样的 “监狱” 给关着, 自己的生活快乐不快乐为什么要由烟酒做主呢, 那就真的没出息了。我跟大家说:是个男子汉大丈夫, 是不好的就不要。烟酒不好就不要, 明明写着 “烟酒有害健康”, 你还愣抽, 会有什么出息?

Is every one of you seated here drawing the same conclusion after having heard this story about Gao Xiao-Song? Do we not want to quit smoking and alcohol? Why are you, full-grown men, not able to even quit smoking and alcohol, and be held captive by them instead? Why let your happiness be dependant on smoking and alcohol? That is really being a good-for-nothing. Let me tell you this: you should, as a fully-grown man, abandon that which is unwholesome. You should abandon smoking and alcohol because they are bad. Has it not been displayed that ‘smoking and alcohol cause harm to your body’? Yet, you mindlessly continue to smoke; will you come to any good? 

 

所以说, 一定要管理好自己, 从一些小事、身边事做起。能把不起眼的小事做好了, 你的自我管理也就比较细致到位了, 进而养成自我管理的习惯, 不断提高自我管理水平。能够管理好自己的人, 也就具备了妥善处理问题的能力, 从而确保自己面临事情不糊涂、不犯错。

That is why we must manage ourselves well, and start from the little things around us. When you are able to perform trivial chores well, you will be more meticulous in your self-management skills; it becomes habitual and the level of your self-management will continue to rise. A person who can manage himself well is equipped with the ability to deal with problems satisfactorily, and he is sure that he will not be led by circumstances into a confused state of mind such that he will engage in wrongful deeds.



所以说

一定要管理好自己

从一些小事

身边事做起

能够管理好自己的人

 也就具备了

妥善处理问题的能力
