quoted stories recorded in Buddhist scriptures
to introduce the merits of building pagodas
Once Buddha Shakyamuni preached
to a great many people
and an old man
was standing at the back
Buddha Shakyamuni then stopped preaching
and invited the old man to come near
He said to the old man
I would tell you a fact that
you would pass away after seven days
and go to the hell and the three evil paths of transmigration
then you will be reborn poor and lowly
The old man completely collapsed
and kneeled in front of Buddha and cried
He said: “Oh, great Buddha,
I looked down upon you in the past
but now I feel the suffering
Since you can tell about my future
please do tell me how to save myself
I will follow your guidance
I will take refuge in you, I will take refuge in you!”
He kneeled down and took refuge
Buddha said to him that
if you wished to save your life
很简单
there’s an easy way
If you could rebuild
the damaged pagoda behind you
7 days later
you would not die
and would be reborn to the pure land in future
If you were reborn as human, you would be born rich
At middle age, you would become a monk and attain liberation
The old man was very happy to hear that
He repaired the old pagoda
and did not die
after seven days
He lived over 100 years old
He was not only lived over a hundred years
but also died free of disease
He went to the pure land and had the chance to be reborn ashuman
