“佛法不坏世间法”

我们成为佛弟子、修行者,

会把世间的事

做得更完美、更精致;

一个保持正觉的人,

做事肯定做到最好,

这就叫佛法不坏世间法。


After we become buddhist disciples or practitioners,

we will do our work in the mundane world more perfect and refined;

A person who keeps

 a sense of mindfulness

always does his best.

This is called Buddha dharma

 not denying worldly law.

 洗一个垫子的不同境界

Washing a mat for different reasons



这个佛法神奇到什么程度!比如说这次,我房间里有一个凳子,他们不小心把茶水倒上去了,然后白布上就有茶渍变黄色的了。我一个弟子把白垫子拆下来洗,洗好之后拿回来了。我看到,就问他:“你发的什么心洗这个垫子的啊?”


How amazing is the dharma! For example, there was a stool in my room on top of which there was a white cloth. The cloth got stained by tea leftover when someone accidentally poured tea on it. One of my disciples removed it and took it back after washing it. When I saw him, I asked him: "For what purpose did you wash the mat?"

如果你没有起心,只是洗这个垫子,那就是凡夫的人,你只是在洗垫子。如果你在洗垫子时想我们身心的垢染,通过洗垫子清洗我的身心世界,那你就是修行人。


If you don’t have anything particular in mind and just plainly wash it, then you are only doing a mortal thing, because you are just doing washing. But if you compare stain to negative part of our body and mind, and you are cleaning your body and mind when washing it, then you are a Buddhist practitioner.


如果你想的只是洗我个人的身心世界,你是小乘;如果你洗这个垫子时想着我与一切法界有情的垢染,我皆令其清净,那你就是大乘修法。


If all you relate to is about yourself (your own body and mind), you are practicing Theravada; instead if you link stain to all sentient beings’ within the dharma world, then you are practicing Mahayana.

如果修到说这个垢染哪里有体性呢,只是因缘而已,所以加一点洗涤剂或者是清水,把它捏一捏就没有了。那你就可以离证悟空性不远了。


If you realize  how the stain can have its substantial existence, it only results from rule of cause and effect, so if you add a little detergent or water, combined with a bit of twist by hand, the stain will definitely be gone. In this case you are not far away from attaining awareness of emptiness.


如果说这个垫子染的时候只是我眼根的判断,现在所谓净的时候也只是我心灵的变化,实际上它是不垢不净的,它本来就是离我们的攀缘心的,它的自性本身是清净的。这个时候你就得自在啦!


If you realize the dyed mat is only seen because of my eyes, and so called turning clean is also just the a correspondence to my changed mind, which means in fact it is neither dirty nor clean, actually arousing from our distracted mind, and the nature itself is clean, then at this moment you will be free and content!




 擦盘子擦出法喜

Achieving Dharma joy when wiping dishes  



所以就洗一个垫子,可以是一个凡人在做事情,做得很苦恼。如果你家里的碗、盘、筷子让你洗,你是不是觉得很烦恼?如果你仅在洗碗,你就是一个凡夫,你会觉得洗碗很烦恼。


So washing a mat can be mundane work, distressing and annoying. Similarly would it bother you to wash your bowls, dishes and chopsticks at home? Thus, if you're just doing the dishes, you're only an ordinary person, and naturally you will find doing dishes distressing and annoying.

但是如果你会修法了,你想“我洗的不是碗,我今天净化一下。”洗碗的时候在净自己,那你就是修行人了,你洗的时候会不会特别开心啊!


But if you know how to practice Buddha Dharma in doing this kind of things, you will think, "I'm not doing the dishes, instead I'm cleaning myself to some extent." Then washing dishes becomes purifying oneself, and then you are a Buddhist practitioner, and you will be particularly happy when you are doing it!


我们修法供曼扎,要拿藏红花水洗曼扎盘的盘底,就观想这是大地,要把大地都擦干净,那你擦十万遍也不嫌多的,擦得特别高兴、法喜充满。为什么在擦自家盘子的时候你没有擦出法喜呢?就是因为没有法,你就认为在洗盘子。


When we practice Dharma in offering Manja, it is necessary for us to take saffron-soaked-water to wash the bottom of the mandala plate. If we visualize the bottom as the huge tracts of earth and keen on wiping it all clean, you will find you can’t wipe enough although you have done for more than a hundred thousand times. In that case you will rub it joyfully and even with joy of Dharma. Why don’t you have such joyful feelings when wiping up your own dishes at home? It is because you did it without sense of dharma, and you think you are just washing dishes.

所以就洗一个东西,还有这么多层次,还有这么多境界。这就是佛法传下来的智慧!


In conclusion, washing can be considered to encompass many layers of understanding, all of which can be accounted for wisdom handed down from dharma!




 扫地扫心地

Sweeping floor as well as cleansing one’s heart 



佛门里有位扫地修行成就的周利盘陀尊者,他很笨,一句话也说不完整的。佛陀让他扫地,让他念“扫帚”二个字,他念了扫忘了帚,念了帚忘了扫。


In the Buddhism field, there was a man called Venerable Culapanthaka who by sweeping the floor attained enlightenment.  He was a slow person who even could not speak out a complete sentence. Buddha told him to practice saying word "broom." while sweep the floor. Unfortunately, he could only remember some part of the pronunciation, saying first part of the word right and forgetting the remaining part; the vice versa.


但是他依着佛的教,扫、扫,忽然,佛陀又跟他讲了一句话,他就记住了——除了扫地还要扫心地。一开始“扫帚”都记不住的,心慢慢地静下来之后,每扫一扫帚,他的身心都跟佛在一起,他扫着扫着就证阿罗汉果了。


He did not give up but persistently followed Buddha's teaching. He swept and swept. Out of his expectation, Buddha said another sentence to him and he remembered it: not only the floor you need to sweep but also your heart to be cleaned. At first he could not even remember a single word, later on when his heart slowly calmed down, integrating his body and mind into Buddha’s world each time he swept, he finally attained the state of Arahat.

难道仅仅只是周利盘陀有生命的希望,可以转凡成圣?我们的智商跟周利盘陀比怎么样,如果他都可以证阿罗汉,那我们可不可以?我们可以啊!我们就是在扫地的时候,没有往心地里扫;我们就是在洗盘子的时候,没有往心地里洗。


Is it only Culapanthaka who embraces the possibility of turning his life into a noble person from a common one? Is our intelligence comparable to his? Yes, it is. If he could attain Arhat, can’t we? Yes, we can! The only difference is when we are sweeping floor, we do not clean our hearts; when washing dishes, we do not clean our hearts either.




佛法不坏世间法

Buddha Dharma does not deny  worldly dharma law



所以说“佛法不坏世间法”。不是说成为佛教徒、成为修行者之后,我们就放弃了世间的建设;我们成为佛弟子、成为修行者,会把世间的事做得更完美、更精致。


Therefore, we say “Buddha Dharma does not deny worldly law.” It's not that we stop contributing to this world when we become Buddhists or practitioners; instead, we will do worldly things more excellent and more delicate.

为什么全世界的人都喜欢戴瑞士手表?因为瑞士进行过宗教改革,瑞士把宗教信仰落实到生活中,落实在工作中。


Why do people all over the world like to wear Swiss watches? That’s because after its religious reform, people’s belief in religion has been practically put into life and work.


瑞士的工匠在做一个小小的螺丝钉的时候,有记者问:“拧进去没有人会看得见,你为什么还要做得那么精呢?”这个钟表匠告诉他:“虽然我们人肉眼看不见,但是上帝知道。”


A Swiss craftsman was making a small screw when a reporter asked him, "Since no one can see it, why do you still work so diligently to make it a fine job?" Surprisingly, he told the reporter, "Although we humans can't see it with their naked eyes, god knows."

我们这个时代提倡要有工匠的精神。一个工匠,如果加上了上帝的视角,如果加上了佛教的修行在里面,是不是手中做的每一样都是精品?所以“佛法不坏世间法”,几千年佛教这么说。


All in all, spirit of craftsmen is well advocated in our era. A craftsman, if possibly equipped with the perspective of god, if possibly applying Buddha Dharma in his work, can’t he make everything in his hand a fine product? This spirit responds to the saying "Buddha dharma does not deny worldly law", which has been passed down for thousands of years in Buddhism.




做事保持正觉

Do things  mindfulness   



还有一句话我们很熟悉,叫“佛法不离世间觉”,很多人会说错一个字,他说“佛法不离世间法”,那就不行了。我们在做着世间事情时,任何时候都要保持着正觉,这就是佛法的修行。


There is another sentence we are very familiar with, called "Buddha dharma cannot be separated from worldly awareness". Many people will say it incorrectly: "Buddha dharma is inseparable from the worldly law", which can be totally wrong. When we are doing things in the world, we should keep mindfulness all the times. This is the practice of Buddha Dharma.

一个有修养的人,他的工作必然会做到非常完美。就像敦煌壁画那么完美、令人震撼,壁画的作者完全是不带功利目的、超越自我的,把自己虔诚的信仰投注在洞窟里,慢慢去画,画出他心灵对佛法的理解,创作出人类文明的艺术殿堂。


For a well-cultivated person, his work is bound to be perfect. Take Dunhuang frescoes for an example, the reason they are so perfect and shocking is because their authors did the work totally without any utilitarian purpose but only thought of challenging themselves. They expressed their devout faith by slowly drawing out those dedicate pictures with their understanding of Buddhism. Finally, they created an art palace for human civilization.

所以,我们平时要思考,要受用,要在生活中去训练。做任何事,你要有一个正念,要保持正觉,这就是修行。修行不是说放下手中的活,而是在手中做活的时候有正觉。


Therefore, we have to  meditate frequently so as to benefit from Buddha Dharma and train ourselves in applying it in our daily life. For everything you do, you have to be mindful and keep it on. That is Dharma practicing. In short, practicing Dharma is not about putting down your work, but about continuing the work in your hand, bearing a sense of mindfulness while doing it.


一个有修行的人,在做着手中的活,能把这个活做到最好;一个保持正觉的人,做事肯定做到最好。这就叫“佛法不坏世间法”!


All in all, for a well -cultivated person  when doing the work in his hand, he can do it to the best; and a person who keeps mindfulness is sure to do the best. This is called "Buddha dharma does not deny worldly law"!
