我们的心灵要长翅膀, 我们不要那种狭隘的自我束缚, 那种约束会生出不好的念想。生命往往是自己束缚自己, 把自己束缚在私利的深渊里, 不敢向往善良与美好, 没有人能关闭你心灵的门, 我们不能自己把它关闭起来。人的自性中美好的东西, 人自己没有权利关起来, 更不能自己去祸害这么珍贵的东西。是我们自我麻痹、自我束缚, 妨碍了我们, 生出一念之差。我们要打开我们的人生观、世界观, 不要自我关闭。人都是自己修的, 转凡成圣都是自己修的, 神仙都是自己修的。《红楼梦》里面最后讲, 人人都知神仙好, 就是世界放不下, 对不对? 人人都知神仙好。

Our spirit needs to grow wings. We do not want to confine and bind ourselves, as that will give rise to unwholesome thoughts. Very often in life, it is we who bind ourselves. We bind ourselves in the abyss of self-serving interests, and we do not have the courage to work towards wholesome kindness and blissfulness. Nobody can shut our spiritual door, and we should not shut it ourselves. We do not have the right to enchain that which is wholesome in our self-nature. Furthermore, we should not bring harm to such a precious thing. A moment’s folly is given rise to when we numb and bind ourselves, and we are hindered by ourselves. We need to open up our perspective on life and our worldview, and not shut ourselves down. We are the result of our own cultivation, so it the transformation into the sagely from the mundane a result of practice. The heavenly beings and the deities are the results of their own practice. Towards the end of Dream of the Red Chamber, it is mentioned that everybody is envious of the heavenly beings and the deities. Is it not because they are being too attached to the mundane world?

 

所以我们今天做交流, 是要知道生命是有无限前途的, 我们的前途是光明的,但是路在我们自己脚下, 要自己走。

The exchange we are having today is to let us know that there is no limit to the possibilities in our life. Although ours is a bright future, the path there is underneath our very own feet and we have to walk it ourselves.

这世界很奇妙的, 不仅仅这样, 到寺庙里面看佛, 两边十六罗汉、十八罗汉,真正的到中国才十八罗汉, 在印度是十六罗汉。

This can be a very strange world. Not only this, you see 16 or 18 arahants on both sides when you visit the monastery to pay respects to the Buddha. In China, you should notice 18 arahants, while in India 16.


为什么许多大学都要研究佛教? 世界名校哈佛、麻省、牛津、剑 桥都有研究佛教的。希望大家听了今天的关于我们老祖先的课和中华民族的传统文化,可以打开我们的心灵, 擦亮我们心灵的镜子, 愿断一切恶、愿修一切善,这话我也不单单是讲给你们听的, 我也是讲给我自己听的。

Why are there so many universities researching Buddhism? Research is being conducted at world-renowned universities like Harvard, MIT, Oxford and Cambridge. It is my hope that everyone of you will open up your spiritual doors after having heard this lesson on Chinese traditional culture that our ancient ancestors have taught us; and that you will polish the mirror of your spiritual selves, aspire to abandon all evil and practise all that is wholesome. This is not only something I say to you; but it is also something I tell myself.


我这一次除了去北京, 我还跑到一个山沟沟里面, 山腰上有个洞, 我找了一个洞, 我准备以后就到那儿住多少年。人要修的, 人要是不修,自己一点出息都没有, 人要不修跟猪狗一样, 或者说是行尸走肉, 如果不修就可以叫自己人面禽兽了。

Besides going to Beijing this time, I also went up into the mountains. I discovered a cave there in which I am preparing to stay for a few years in the future. We need to practise; we will not end up in any good if we do not. If we do not cultivate ourselves, we are like the pig and the dog; or we can call ourselves the walking dead. We will be known as animals with human faces if we do not cultivate ourselves through practice.


所以我们自己要改造自己, 自己要好好的, 要立于天地之间。我们大家心里都在向往光明。古时候舜帝走到哪儿都会彩云满天, 这是一种人天感应。最后再请我们智坛师父给我们唱一首歌, 唱他自己作词、作曲的《彩虹甘露》, 我们听一听, 结束今天的讲座。

As such, we need to transform ourselves, be a proper person such that we can stand with an upright footing in the world. We need to align our mind towards illumination. The sky used to be full of radiant clouds wherever Emperor Shun went in the past. That was a kind of mutual resonance between man and heaven. Lastly, let us invite Master Zhi-Tan to sing us a song again, the lyrics and music of which he penned himself – Rainbow Dew; after which we shall end today’s talk.

TWO

不要怕犯错,只要方向对

唱歌有时候有破绽也是好处, 代表这是真唱。就像我讲话, 有讲颠倒的、讲错的, 代表我们是真的人, 是不是? 凡人都会有错, 有点错不要紧, 只要我们方向对。

The good side of singing which is imperfect is that we know it is real. It is like when I speak in opposite terms or when I speak wrongly sometimes. It shows that I am a real person, right? Ordinary humans err; it is not so serious if we do something wrong sometimes, as long as we are in the right direction.


这一次是我第四次来这片土地, 这里人杰地灵; 我们在全国各地、世界各地弘法, 十几年了。

This is the fourth time I am here in an auspicious place which has nurtured many individuals of excellence.  We have been to many places throughout the country as well as the world to propagate the Dharma for more than ten years.


要在社会上那些人的眼睛里, 这些人傻不傻啊! 出什么家? 大鱼大肉不吃, 对不对? 你看, 我们傻吗? 可是在别人眼里这就是傻子。

This seems like something foolish to certain people in our society. They ask why are we doing this instead of enjoying ourselves by feasting on delicious seafood and meats. What do you think? Are we foolish? The fact is, we are, in the eyes of certain people.

为什么要这样? 全国各地跑, 我住在庙里, 全国各地许多人都会来朝拜的。我要出来, 出来这样到处走干嘛? 风餐露宿别人不理解。虽然走在中华大地上, 有时候我们还是孤独的, 理解的人少, 虽然能理解的少, 但是我们老祖先理解啊! 当然, 我们做人, 不是说大家想到的东西都会在一个层次上。你说我以后也如何如何, 不是那么简单的。像我们出家, 也不只是这一辈子做和尚,我们生生世世有可能也做多少世了。像我生下来看到佛塔就喜欢, 莫名其妙地喜欢, 起初没人教我学佛的, 七转八转很痛苦的。最后找到佛教, 一学到佛之后, 什么都没味道, 就是学佛、就是修行有味道。

Why should I be running like this all over the country? People will make pilgrimages from all the country to see me if I stay in the monastery. Why should I bother to travel all over like this? Others might not be able to understand the wandering life we go through. We can feel lonely sometimes and that few people understand us sometimes despite the fact that it is the great land of the Chinese we are on. Our ancient forefathers understand us although few people do. In life, it does not necessarily mean that something which everybody has thought of will be understood on the same level by everyone. It is not so simple when you tell me I will turn out in a certain way in the future. Take us monastics for instance, we could also have been monastics for most of our past existences; it is not only in our present existence that we have renounced the household life. I have always taken a liking to pagodas since the moment of my birth. I find it inexplicable. Nobody taught me about Buddhism in the beginning. It was very difficult for me as I had to search high and low. In the end, I found Buddhism; and since then, everything else was bland for I only found meaning in Buddhism and its practice.      


所以不一定我们的人生路上以后都能够学佛、出家, 或者去做一番伟业。但是人生只要方向对, 何时何地都要开放自己的向善之心, 你能够把握自己的良心, 你能够摸着良心不愧于天地, 你在哪儿都会有一个幸福的人生。

As such, there is a possibility that we all might be able to practise Buddhism, renounce the household life or have a great career in the future. However, as long as you have set for yourself a correct direction in life and your mind is open and wholesome, and you are confident in your own conscience such that you are able to face the world without any remorse, you will have a blessed life wherever you go.  


THREE

心中有爱,实为贵

心中有爱的平凡人, 虽贫实贵。做一个心中有爱的平凡人, 也是非常有意义的事情。今天首先对大家表示抱歉, 让大家坐了这么久, 本来说给我两个小时时间, 结果我又送了两个小时给大家, 买一送一。

With love in them, an ordinary person possesses dignity although he is destitute materially. There is great meaning to being a person who possesses love. Let me apologise to you firstly for having made you sit too long. You were supposed to be here for two hours; but I took a further two hours long – you buy one, you get one free.


我在这里提议, 我们大家借这个吉祥的机会, 共同谢谢我们的师长, 感恩他们。我们对他们的感恩, 会减轻他们的工作压力, 也会扫去压在我们心头的雾霾。这里特别感恩我们在座的诸位兄弟给我这个机会, 让我在这里和大家共同分享一点我的心灵感受, 感谢大家!

Let me suggest to you here that you should make use of this auspicious opportunity to together show thanks and gratitude to your teachers. Your display of gratitude towards them will reduce the work pressure they are feeling, and also clear up any doubts we might have. I am especially thankful to every one of my brothers here for having given me this opportunity to come here and share with everyone some of my spiritual experience. Thank you, everyone!

刚才扫心地四句诗, 结束的时候把它圆满, 我们一起念一下:

In coming to a full ending, we should chant again the four-line verse on the cleansing of our mind that we mentioned just now:


“ 扫地扫地扫心地, 心地不扫空扫地。人人若把心地扫, 世界皆成清净地。”

“ We sweep also the ground of our mind as we sweep the floor. We will only be blindly sweeping the floor if the ground of our mind is not being swept. If everyone is sweeping the ground of their mind. The world will be one the ground of which is serene and pure.”


单就这一个佛教的扫地的修行, 有一个一字都不识的佛弟子, 连完整话都不会讲的, 因为就修这一个证得阿罗汉, 神通广大。

Just this Buddhist method of practice of ‘floor-sweeping’ alone once enabled a disciple who was utterly illiterate and could not speak in complete sentences to attain arahantship such that he wielded miraculous powers.


这个故事我就不说了, 佛教里太多这些好故事了, 希望我们大家以后自己好好学。今天我们结了缘了, 我的心里为大家祈祷, 以后我念经、学佛, 也都会回向在座的诸位兄弟。希望大家身心健康, 家里的父母也健康, 孩子也健康成长, 希望我们的人生幸福光明。让我们的心真正悔过, 进而护持我们自性中原有的佛心, 去真善美中找到自我。希望我们不要枉此一生, 都能够转凡成圣。

I will then not need to go into this story. There are too many such wholesome stories in Buddhism. I hope everyone will practice properly in future. As we have made the karmic connection today, I will pray for you in my heart and from now on, I will dedicate the merits from my chanting and practice to every one of you my brothers here. I wish you health both physically and mentally, and the same for your parents and children at home as well. I hope your life will be blessed and illuminated. Let us have genuine repent for what we have done wrong so that the Buddha mind that is originally in our self-nature will remain, and that we are able to find ourselves again in truth, wholesomeness, and beauty. Let us have to ability to transform into the sagely from the mundane and not put to waste this life that we are having now.
