莱菔菜

主持人:法师对快乐作了一个非常详细的开示。

Moderator: The master has given us a very detailed description of happiness.  

 

正好我记下了,弘一大师的一位好友——夏丏尊先生,专门写过一篇文章说:有一天,夏丏尊想请弘一大师吃饭,就带了一盘菜。弘一大师吃到这盘菜的时候,他描写了他的那种状态,这菜的名字一听,就知道颜值特高,叫“莱菔”

This has just nicely made me remember an essay a very good friend of Master Hong-Yi  Mr. Xia Mian-Zun – wrote, in which is mentioned a meal he was treating Master Hong-Yi one day. In it he describes how Master Hong-Yi reacted when he came upon a particular dish that was included in the meal. One thinks the dish to be a delicious one as soon as its name is spoken – laifu.

我说这肯定是一名贵的菜,要不然怎么会吃成这样?夏先生描写道:弘一大师变色而作,突然脸上就变得非常喜悦。好像是一场盛宴哪!“喜悦地把饭划入口里,郑重地用筷子夹起一块莱菔来的那种了不得的神情,我见了几乎要流下欢喜惭愧之泪了!”

I tell myself that this must have been an expensive dish. If not, why had Master Hong-Yi enjoyed it as such? Mr Xia described how Master Hong-Yi’s expression had taken a drastic change, with his face suddenly filled with extreme delight, and looking as if he was enjoying a sumptuous feast. He writes, ‘The look of him paddling rice into his mouth with relish, using his chopsticks to pick up each piece of radish in a serious manner and with a great sense of achievement almost made me tear with happy contrition.’

“莱菔”是什么山珍海味?在座的,有知道的吗?还好,我查了一下,“莱菔”即是萝卜,人到了这个境界就是真正的快乐

What kind of a heavenly cuisine is laifu? Does anyone of you here know? I did check it up fortunately. Laifu is simply radish. When a person has reached such a level, that is true happiness.

像法师和赵导讲的,就是内心的喜悦,由内而外地出来了。不会再被外在的这些世俗的物质的东西所干扰,这也是为什么现在这么多人都渴望佛法了。有的找到传喜法师的寺院,待了几天,感受到了一种豁然开朗或脱胎换骨的体验。

Like what the master and Director Zhao have mentioned, this is happiness that comes from within and which spreads out to the external. It will never be affected by material objects of the external mundane world. This is also why so many people hunger for the Dharma. Some of them have managed to discover Master Chuan-Xi’s monastery in which they would stay for a few days, feeling a kind of unrestrained jovialness or a sense of transformed existence at the end of their stay there.

主持人:不到现场,很多信息难以体会,比如甘甜的泉水、幽静的环境,还有偶尔传来的孔雀的叫声等。但有些人,他去不了,比如说失足青年。听说您与他们有过交流,那您能谈一谈感想吗?

Moderator: It is difficult for us to have a sense of much of the experience like the sweetness of the spring water, the serenity of the surrounding, and the occasional calls of the peacocks from faraway without being physically there. However, some people, like youths who have gone astray, are not able to be there. I have heard that you have made exchanges with them. Would you then wish to share with us your thoughts on that?


传喜法师:佛是梵语,中国话的意思是“觉悟者”,觉悟者的行为达到圆满,称为“佛”。我们人间最匮乏的资源就是觉悟,人被生下来,带着一个十分聪明的大脑来到世间。然而我们最委屈的就是,一生一世许多重要事情无缘懂得,能力未得尽展,自性未经修习而获得智慧,生命便匆匆而过。许多人麻木一生,自生的天分根本没用过,任凭本有的佛性在心底沉睡,然后就被推进火葬场给烧掉了

Master Chuan-Xi: ‘Buddha’ is a Sanskrit word. It means ‘the Enlightened One’. A ‘Buddha’ is an enlightened person whose conduct has reached perfection. The resource that is lacking most in the human world is enlightenment. At the time of its birth, a human being is brought into this world with a very intelligent brain. However, it is our greatest regret to fail to understand many important matters in our lifetime, with life rushing away in an instant while we do not develop our capability or train our self-nature such that wisdom can be attained. Many lead a de-sensitized life and have never made use of their inherent talents, letting the Buddha-nature which is already in their mind remain in its deep sleep, and finally ending up to be cremated at the crematorium.

佛性在心底沉睡

     生命匆匆而过

这是人间最大的浪费。这比一盘子饭只扒了两口就倒掉,还要浪费。在这个资源匮乏的时代,最大的匮乏就是我们的智慧

This is the greatest waste in the human world, more wasteful than throwing away a plate of rice after having just taken two mouthfuls. This is a time of scarcity, and the greatest scarcity is wisdom.


当然,在人类社会活动中,只要有生命的地方,就需要我们佛性的觉醒。那些“失足青年”,是我们长辈的孩子、我们年轻人的兄弟,他们更需要这种智慧的苏醒、佛性的觉悟。他们也应当设法争取心灵自救,失足者最需要的是觉醒无论是孟子的“人性本善”,还是有人提出的“人性本恶”,总之,人的善恶是不定的佛教里说:“性识无定,恶习结业,善习结果,为善为恶,逐境而生。”正因为“不定”,教育才显得那么神圣伟大

Of course, as long as humans go about their lives in societies and wherever there is life, we need our Buddha-nature to be awakened. Those youths who have gone astray and who are the children of our elders and also our younger brothers need the awakening of this kind of wisdom and the enlightenment of the Buddha-nature even more. They also need to find ways to save their own spiritual selves, as what those who have gone astray need most is awakened enlightenment. Whether human nature is originally wholesome according to Mencius or unwholesome according to others, it is generally speaking not pre-determined. It is said in Buddhism that one’s nature and consciousness is not pre-determined; karma results from one’s bad habits and wholesome fruits from one’s good habits; and the wholesomeness or unwholesomeness of an act is dependent on how one reacts when one comes into contact with an object of consciousness. It is precisely because it is not predetermined that education is deemed sacrosanct and great.

如果说年轻人需要智慧的启迪、人格的塑造,那么失足青年同样需要圣贤文化的感召和安抚,需要来自社会种种善意的真切关怀

If it is deemed necessary that young people should be inspired by wisdom and have their character nurtured, then those youths who have gone astray should also need the calling and comfort of the culture of the sagely and the virtuous, as much as they need the sincere concern coming from all the kind people in our society.

由于心灵的迷失、行为的错谬,不仅给他人、给社会制造了痛苦和伤害,他自己也成为身心的受害者,害人即是害己

When someone loses his spiritual self and conducts himself wrongly, he not only brings pain and harm to society, he is himself a victim in body and in mind; because as he brings harm to others, he harms himself.

当面对他们的时候,我对自己说:我并不比他们强多少。首先,我尊重他们的人格、维护他们的尊严,以平等的心态,与他们共同面对圣贤,共同来分享“为什么要做一个戒恶修善的人”,而不是对他们进行说教。所以三四个小时交流下来,他们从心有怀疑的局外人,慢慢、慢慢,我们合成了一体;他们的眼神里,出现了那种相互的理解、温暖,甚至在他们的脸上也绽放出了发自内心的笑容,他们在向这个社会、向外界敞开他们郁结闭塞的心灵。

When I am faced with them, I tell myself that I am not any much better than them. Firstly, I am respectful of their character and protective of their self-esteem. Instead of proselytizing to them, I treat them as my equal and join them in facing up to the sagely and the virtuous, and share with them why it is that we have to be someone who refrains from evil and practises wholesomeness. Therefore, within the three to four hours of my interaction with them, they are able to very slowly come to a union with me, when they had been suspicious of me being an outsider previously. In their eyes is displayed some kind of mutual understanding and warmth, and there is even also on their faces a smile which comes from within – they have opened up to this society and the outside world their spiritual selves which they have previously shut down due to their being depressed.

所以,有人的地方就需要有智慧的启迪。今天我们在一起研究讨论人生中这个最大的话题,这个话题将伴随我们生命的始终。

Therefore, wisdom needs to be inspired wherever humans exist. This most important theme of human existence that we are discussing here today shall be part of our lives from the beginning to the end.
