When Our Mind Settles, It Dwells in the Lotus
僧团这样的群体,因为有佛陀教法的传承,所以形成了高智慧的行为标准、语言标准和思想标准,我们身在其中的时候,就会特别注意身口意上的清净。
A monastic community, being guided by and upholding the Buddha’s teachings, naturally develops high standards of wisdom, behaviour, speech, and thought. When we immerse ourselves in such an environment, we become particularly mindful of the purity of our actions, speech, and mind.
哪怕你自己去住茅棚,也要有一个有道的人给你指明住处,为你结界,你才可以住,否则是过不了鬼神这一关的。所谓“阿兰若”,除了没有人声,最重要的就是没有鬼神侵扰。
Even if you choose to live alone in a thatched hut, it is essential to have a virtuous person guide you in selecting the location and the consecration of the boundaries. Without this, you may fail to pass the test of spirits and deities. The concept of "Āraṇya" (a secluded place for spiritual practice) not only signifies a place free from human disturbances but, more importantly, a place undisturbed by spirits and deities.
我们师兄净旻法师也讲过“三个半和尚”,朝山的和尚算半个,他到哪里住下来之后,首先要念三个咒:普庵咒铺地,大悲咒打墙,楞严咒结顶。哪怕一个修道的道士到一个地方要住下来,也要画符,也要念咒,否则他过不了鬼神这一关的。
Our Dharma brother, Venerable Master Jingmin, once shared the concept of "three and a half monks." A pilgrimage monk is counted as half. When such a monk settles in a place, the first things he must do is to chant three mantras: the Pū’ān mantra to sanctify the ground, the Great Compassion mantra to purify the walls, and the Śūraṅgama mantra to bless the roof. Even a Daoist practitioner, upon settling in a location, must draw talismans and recite mantras to pass the test of spirits and deities.
Our collective practice carries this merit, allowing our minds to settle.
我们共修就有这个功德,所以我们的心要安住,安住了就在莲花里。天人为什么有天福?就是因为他安于其座,这是天人的一个德相,天人如果不爱其座,就是天福享尽、死相现前了。
Our collective practice carries this merit, allowing our minds to settle. When they do, we dwell in the lotus. Why do celestial beings enjoy heavenly blessings? It is because they are content with their seats. This is a virtue of celestial beings. If they lose attachment to their seat, their heavenly blessings will be exhausted, and the signs of their demise will manifest.
所以,我们在念佛堂里念佛,每念一个字脚要踏着佛号的节奏。因为当你的身口意都合着节奏的时候,生命就会融入这句佛号里。这句佛号就可以净化我们,可以让我们修行成片。
Thus, when we chant the Buddha's name in the hall, every step should align with the rhythm of the chant. When our body, speech, and mind are harmonized with this rhythm, our life merges with the recitation. The Buddha’s name can purify us and help us cultivate uninterrupted mindfulness.
当我们修行成片时,就犹如亲近阿兰若。僧团的长处就可以补我们个体的短处,三宝的功德、福德、威德,都会加被到我们身上。
When our practice becomes continuous, it is like being close to Āraṇya. The strengths of the monastic community can compensate for the weaknesses of individuals. The merits, blessings, and dignity of the Triple Gem will also bless and support us.
