The greatest challenge in transcending life and death is severing the cycle of life and death that you have created for yourself. There was a Venerable Master whose teacher instructed him to seek the Self, saying: "The sins were created by me, thus repentance must also begin with me." Only through great determination can one truly overcome the immense mountain of karma. Once you surpass it, the fruits of your efforts will naturally manifest, without asking for it.
Part.01
The Greatest Obstacle Is the Self.
The greatest obstacle is the Self. Everything you do is a test of whether you can transcend the Self and master it. If you can overcome it, victory is certainly yours. If learning Buddhism is merely about “You’re good, I’m good, everyone’s good,” then true progress is unlikely. Most of us are usually polite, and maintaining politeness helps sustain long-term Buddhist practice.
To truly transcend, one must follow the example of this Venerable Master. He told his disciples, “It’s fine for you to visualize me as a Buddha, however, are you paying attention to the Dharma I’ve practiced to achieve this state?”
Part.02
The Dharma Is the Master’s Gift to You
He further explained, “Not only am I not a Buddha, but I’ve spent dozens of lifetimes as an animal. This is my first life as a human being, and it is all because I followed my Master’s teachings rigorously and practiced the Dharma diligently. In this life, I have transcended birth and death. If you only visualize me as a Buddha, while it strengthens your pure visualization and faith, it does a disservice to the Dharma. Don’t forget my achievements came through practicing the Dharma.”
In this current degenerate age of the Dharma, sentient beings have reversed priorities. While they are drawn to the Dharma itself, they forget that it is merely the Master’s gift to them, much like a parent rewarding a well-behaved child. This is why certain teachings are kept secret and only revealed when the Master deems the disciple ready. Nowadays, numerous sutras and high-level tantric texts are widely available—even in bookstores. But can reading them alone lead to liberation or transcendence of life and death? No.
Part.03
“Master, do you transmit the Dharma?”
Even if you read countless scriptures, if your discriminatory consciousness and arrogance does not diminish—if you add a sense of pride in your knowledge of the Dharma to your already solidified arrogance—it’s like pouring concrete into your ego, further entrenching you in delusion, transforming you into a Mara rather than a Buddha. In this degenerate age, people are overly attached to the tangible aspects of the Dharma. Some even come to me after years of practice and still ask, “Master, do you transmit the Dharma?”
Is our sitting here in accordance with the Dharma? Have our body and mind been properly harmonized and softened? The gentle light radiating from our lives, this joy of the Dharma, becomes the fruit of our existence. If you often experience this, you will bear abundant fruit. This is what the Master has arranged for you—to practice, and to practice wholeheartedly.
In this degenerate age, there are many perverted views. For instance, when the Venerable Master initially followed his Master, that too was the Dharma. Later, when his Master revealed the truth, that was also the Dharma—painstakingly cultivated. As I mentioned in yesterday’s Dharma assembly, even singing a song could conclude the session, but why do we recite rituals afterward? It’s because the earlier rituals are too profound and abstract, impossible to replicate or fully grasp. They are unique, like a one-of-a-kind creation from Huiri Monastery—a limited edition with an intricate, uncrackable code. In contrast, the ritual texts are simple: anyone can take a book and recite them at home.
