主持人:《菩萨泪》这首歌,是慧日寺的出家师父们共同创作的,由知客师善济师父作词,智坛师父演唱,目前网上的点击已过千万。刚才我们讲快乐,但是菩萨为什么还会落泪?我们来听一下。
Moderator: The song The Tears of the Bodhisattva is a creation by those who have come to Hui Ri Monastery to renounce the household life - the lyrics having been written by the Venerable Shan-Ji who is the master in-charge of the reception of guests, the music by Huo Zhun, and the singer is Venerable Zhi-Tan. At present, it has been heard more than ten million times on-line. Since we have been talking about happiness before this, why are the Bodhisattvas still shedding tears? Let us listen to the song.

大家都觉得学佛的人善良,“诸恶莫作,众善奉行”,我们通常说的“善良”和佛教里讲的“慈悲”是不是一个概念?我们还是把这个专业的问题交给法师来解答。
Everyone feels that Buddhists are kind since they ‘refrain from evil and practice all that is wholesome’. Is what we commonly known as ‘kindness’ the same idea as ‘loving-kindness and compassion’ as mentioned in Buddhism? We shall leave such a technical question to the master.
善良=慈悲吗?
传喜法师:善良有时来自我们的一种本能吧。孟子主张“性善论”,他说:“君子之于禽兽也,见其生,不忍见其死;闻其声,不忍食其肉。”孟子具有的善良、恻隐之心,令他对众生的不幸遭遇深怀同情。
Master Chuan-Xi: Kindness perhaps sometimes comes from our instinct. It was Mencius idea that ‘humans are inherently good’. He said, ‘When it comes to the animals, the gentleman cannot bear to watch them die when he has seen them, and to feed on them when he has heard them.’ Possessing kindness and sympathy, Mencius was able to empathize with those sentient beings who had met with misfortune.
人之初 性本善
我们佛家人常说慈悲为怀。慈悲,是在生命善的本能和基础上的一种理智的坚守。所以,慈悲是一种选择,慈悲跟善良之间有共性,但慈悲是理智的结果。我们如果没有理智地提升自己,善良有时会很快泯灭,不在智慧指导下的善良,有时或许还会被人利用。
We Buddhists always say we have to have loving-kindness and compassion. Loving-kindness and compassion are traits arising from the instinctive and fundamental goodness in our life which we have to rationally maintain in us. As such, being lovingly-kind and compassionate is a choice. There is a similarity between loving-kindness and compassion and kindness, but loving-kindness and compassion is the result of being rational. Kindness is sometimes quickly extinguished if we are not sensible enough to elevate ourselves; and when not being led by wisdom, kindness is sometimes misused by others.

而慈悲不同,慈悲是一种坚定、智慧的善良状态。可以这样来解释,慈是给予别人乐,悲是拔除别人的苦。慈悲包含着关照全社会、全人类的博爱心怀。佛教里说:“无缘大慈,同体大悲。”慈与乐的对象是不分的,就像孔夫子教学生,有教无类。关爱护佑众生,给他们带来欢乐,这叫做慈;怜悯众生,关心他们的命运,祛除他们的苦难,这叫做悲。
However, loving-kindness and compassion is different. It is a form of persistesnce and a state of kind wisdom. It can be explained as such: that loving-kindness is to bring happiness to others, while compassion is to eradicate the suffering of others. Loving-kindness and compassion encompasses concern for the whole of society and love for the whole of humankind. In Buddhism, it is said that loving-kindness is unconditional, and that compassion is universal. There is no differentiation as to whom should be treated with loving-kindness and whom be brought joy. It is like how Confucius taught his students without any discrimination. He was caring and concerned towards all, and he brought them joy. This is known as loving-kindness. To be sympathetic towards myriad beings and be concerned with their fate, and to eradicate their suffering – this is known as compassion.
特殊的高度
慈悲是智者、圣人的一种生命情怀,具有一种特殊的高度。慈悲是佛法的根本之道,有层次上的高低。假如“善良”是所有人共同具有的一种品质的话,而“慈悲”是只有智者、圣人才具有的一种特殊品质,它来自于善良,是通过理智的规范、坚定的修炼,最后升华而达至的一种生命的格局与高度。
Loving-kindness and compassion is a kind of life outlook which the wise and the sagely one possess that is special and high-minded. Loving-kindness and compassion is the root path of Buddhism and there are levels to it. While kindness is a trait common to all people, loving-kindness and compassion is a special trait shared only by the wise and sagely ones - for it arises from kindness, and within the scope of rationality and through persistent training, finally sublimates into a kind of broad outlook of life and high-mindedness.
