The Core of the Ānāpānasati Practice
The essential focus of the Ānāpānasati practice (Mindfulness of Breathing) lies in observing the breath as it enters and leaves the body, where the point of attention quickly converges at the sensation of the breath touching the nostrils.
This sensation represents the Wind Element (vāyu), a manifestation of form, “rūpa,” a Material Phenomena. Form encompasses all aspects of sensation, perception, volition, and consciousness.
The characteristics of the four great elements within our body and throughout the universe are fully expressed within this single manifestation of the Wind Element.
By analysing the Wind Element, one can, as if counting prayer beads, trace back through the components of our body and the cosmos, transcending them.
The awareness of sensation of the breath at the nostrils is a manifestation of name, “nāma,” a Mental Phenomena.
Through contemplative insight, our existence reveals two forms: the Material Phenomena (rūpa) and the Mental Phenomena (nāma).
This observation leads to further analyse the Wind Element, and the interplay of form, feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, extending to include Mental Phenomena.
Both form and name are phenomena born of conditions and not of a permanent nature. Neither Mental Phenomena nor Material Phenomena are abiding, eternal truths; thus, one transcends both, elevating oneself further into the true nature of contemplative insight (vipassana).
