Section Two - On the Road
Moderator: Our theme is ‘meeting oneself’ – something which is counter-intuitive in fact. Why do we need to search for and meet ourselves if we are ourselves? In short, have you lost yourself?
I also feel it has been a very long time since I lost myself. As such, I feel ashamed. I especially and honestly hope that the three exceptional persons here today could share with us their life experiences, including those of Master Hong-Yi, such that we are able to find ourselves again. Shall we invite them to be our guides?
Audience: Yes.
Moderator: Let us start with ‘meeting’ then. I shall now introduce Master Chuan-Xi in a more detailed manner. The consensus among everyone is that wherever he goes, he would bring happiness and joy with him. He does not even need to go anywhere now. Whenever people - from either this country or overseas - who have a karmic connection with him -watch him on the internet and in the reporting in the other forms of media, read the essays that he has written, or listen to him teach, there is sense of genuine joy to which is given rise in them.
So, let us ask Master Chuan-Xi: We learn from the theatrical play Master Hong-Yi that a large part of Master Hong-Yi’s life was spent meditating and studying. Why is it that for Master Chuan-Xi, he is mostly seen to be always on the road, in the airport or at the train terminal?
Master Chuan-Xi: The best way for us to understand Great Master Hong-Yi is to view his life in two parts: the time when he was still a householder and the time during which he had renounced his household life. It has been academically acknowledged that Master Hong-Yi was a multi-talented genius and a pioneer of the New Culture Movement in the history of the development of Chinese culture in the last century, for he was the one who first introduced Western oil painting, piano, and theatre to the Chinese. Not only that, he was famous in the world for being well-versed in Chinese calligraphy, poetry, Chinese painting, music, tablet engraving, and acting.
The level of skill Li Shu-Tong (Master Hong-Yi) achieved in traditional culture is extremely high. The time in which he lived was one during which there was a violent clash between the culture of the East and that of the West – so violent that it was fight to the death; much unlike the exchange we are conducting in peace now. This led Master Hong-Yi to not only ponder over the future of the individual but that of the nation as well.
He was always tirelessly contemplating and searching. He went on a fast in Hu Pao Ding Hui Monastery and resolved the self-doubts he had, awakening at the same time the life force that was in him, such that a state of ungraspable fluidity was reached in which was achieved the equilibrium of his mind and his body. He was then able to free himself from the bind of depression and find the direction of his life. This direction of his life was not one the sake of which was only for himself and the country, it was also for the agitated world. As such, he resolved to resign from his job as a highly-respected teacher and aspire to rise up and do something much more nobler, something that would be the highlight of his life - a guide of the soul.
In training systematically, he had put Buddhism into practice. It is said in Confucianism that ‘one can neither draw a square without a ruler nor a circle without a compass’. He had found a very effective and practical method in the Buddhist ‘school of the precepts’. He felt that the whole world needed standards of conduct whether these related to the individual, groups of people, the society, or the world at large; and he made in-depth studies into this school so he could share his experiences with everyone. This reminds me of what Confucius once said, that ‘he could, at the age of seventy, follow the desires of his mind without transgressing the standards of conduct.’

There is Sentience even in Ceramic Tiles
We see that in his having set for himself stringent standards of conduct, he was rewarded with great spiritual freedom, and was finally able to live a kind of existence that was the noblest – in which ‘spring was bursting on the tip of flowers, and the moon full in the middle of the sky’. He has not only inspired us individually, but he is also an asset to our society and the world. There is a value which is eternal to this subject.
That which Master Hong-Yi had searched for was a practical method to deal with the problem of the future of our homeland. He left us with much spiritual wealth and his spirit will live forever. Our Elder You who is already more than 80 of age still plays the role of Master Hong-Yi, and in so doing, enables Master Hong-Yi’s charisma to live on.
Just now, the moderator was asking me why I am on the road as I am always seen in the airport and the train terminal.
Buddhism is the wisdom that has been tried and tested during the last few thousand years of human history, the well-developed system of thinking of which needs to be passed down. Whenever I am on the train, there will invariably be people who cannot stop themselves from coming up to me to ask, ‘Master, can I speak with you briefly?’ After we have chatted, they would conclude, ‘So this is Buddhism; why have I not known and let you tell me this earlier?’ The teaching of the Dharma is something which is expedient; not only do we practise and propagate the Dharma in the monastery, we do the same on the road as well.
And so it is that we bustle around and call out; to rather be a propagator of Buddhism or even a paper boy or someone who carries plates.
At the same time as we enjoy ourselves during this process, we make self-adjustments. It is only when we help others that we discover that the one who needs help the most is ourselves. This is because it is often when we go about helping others that we discover that our will, ability, wealth and so on are much limited. As such, this process is also a kind of personal practice for ourselves, and it is one which is natural and expedient. I will be the first to derive benefits when I help others.
Moderator: The master is very self-deprecating for he is always saying that he is the furthest from the mainstream among those who are already not in the mainstream, and that he has only simplicity of mind and sincerity of heart. As he was going on about carrying plates just now, I would like to ask the master, since having been here to Shandong and places like Jinan and Linyi, how he feels about carrying this ‘plate’?
Master Chuan-xi: This is the first time I am here in Linyi and it has left a particularly strong impression on me. Having seen the ‘spirit of Yimeng’, we are reminded of the story of the wheelbarrow in which the residents of the hills in Yimeng aligned themselves with millions of farmers in revolt to create a new China using the wheelbarrow.
There is an old saying in China that loyal officials and decent ministers must have come from families in which there is much filial piety. In The Painting of the Twenty-four Filial Pieties, seven of the depicted pieties relate to Linyi, and the stories of Wang Xiang lying on the ice to pray for carp fish for his step-mother and Min Zi-Qian still being filial to his step-mother despite having been given by her clothing made of reed to wear in the winter have their origins here.
Filial piety is a traditional virtue of the Chinese - it is at the core of our culture, and the standard of morality upon which family ties in the Chinese society are maintained. Filial piety needs to be inculcated as well. The people from whom we benefit the most are none other than our parents. We need to understand the benefaction they have given us. The love of our parents for ourselves is instinctive whereas our attempt at understanding their love for us needs to be the result of rational observation. This kind of education comes from the inspiration of the teachings of the sages and the virtuous ones.
Among Confucius’s 72 Virtuous Ones, 13 of them came from Linyi. We can see that it is the age-old culture of the virtuous that has nurtured generation upon generation of such descendants who possess the ‘spirit of Yimeng’ and the ‘spirit of the wheelbarrow’. This also goes to show that the culture of the sages and the virtuous ones is still presently thriving and flourishing, blossoming and bearing fruit.
Having come here, I have been deeply influenced first and foremost, and very much inspired. As such, this is the lesson I first receive when I carry the plate here.
At Gan Lu Monastery yesterday, I shared with everybody Wang Xi-Zhi’s Preface at Orchid Pavilion. Being honoured as the sage of calligraphy, Wang Xi-Zhi is the pride of the people of Linyi; and Preface at Orchid Pavilion which is known by everyone, is regarded as the foremost masterpiece in Chinese calligraphy. That the sky was clear and the air fresh, the breeze gentle and the weather favourable during those two days in the beginning of late spring is a spot-on description of that time of the year and the setting being depicted in Preface at Orchid Pavilion. Therefore, the aim of my sharing Preface at Orchid Pavilion with everybody is to enable everyone to enjoy the blessing of being immersed together in the culture of the sagely and the virtuous ones, and to be submerged in the wisdom of our forefathers, such that our body can be cleansed and our spirit pacified. This is a kind of happiness.
Moderator: It seems you have even carried the plate to the peak of Mount Tai to offer his encouragement to all mountain climbers and those in the service of charitable organizations, Master Chuan-Xi has written a poem titled To the One Ascending Mount Tai. It reads:
The mountain of Chinese emperors and kings, It rises from the ground and penetrates into the heavens.
The Street of Heaven is where The Primordial Sovereign of the Coloured Clouds of Dawn dwells;
And the Dai Temple, where the realms of yin and yang meet.
One begins the ascent from Hong Men, Travelling seven thousand steps and eighteen bends.
This is the path of the sagely and virtuous ones since the ancient times; And it is more difficult than to ascend the heavens.
However, harbouring aspirations that are higher than the clouds;
One’s transformation into gold is certain.
In the process of spreading positive energy and wholesomeness, there will for certain be many difficulties like those one will encounter when one attempts to climb Mount Tai. We would like to first have the master share with us as to what was the greatest difficulty he had and how he was able to overcome that difficulty completely.
Master Chuan-Xi: The more we attempt to do the things we set out to do, the more we find that our abilities are limited. Since his ancestors were doctors of the royal families, my teacher Master Wu-Dao used the practice of medicine as a metaphor and said, ‘One who has practised medicine for a year is confident to cure all illnesses; one who has practised for 10 years finds it hard to even move an inch.’ My master felt that all illnesses are not that simple.
It is the same when we try to accomplish something. We find a task simple when we do not fully understand the problem at hand. It is only when we attempt to accomplish it and put ourselves in that predicament that we find everything to be not as simple as it seems. We find that it is ourselves that we need to firstly overcome when difficulties arise. We need to be able to keep our steely composure whenever we find ourselves in a situation in which everything seems so complicated, not to put the blame on others when we find ourselves in dire straits, not to be lost in ourselves but still be in an awakened state whenever others affirm us, honourably understand that it is us ourselves who benefit the most when all wholesome causes and conditions have come together, and be grateful for that which has resulted from the coming together of those causes and conditions.
According to the ancients, humility enables a person to get better while self-complacency leads to failure. Humans scale mountains, and whenever we give up climbing a mountain whichever that might be, that mountain will be taller than us. When your will, wisdom and perseverance are greater than the mountains, you will then be taller than the mountains. I feel that we need to understand ourselves clearly whenever we deal with people or do things; we should not give up halfway.
A saying goes that the only way to find out whether an animal is a mule or a horse is to take it out for a stroll. Otherwise, you would only be making a carriage within closed doors, not understanding how the world is outside. As we set out to accomplish things, there will always be opportunities for us to make improvements to the quality of our lives. The greatest difficulty is the overcoming of ourselves.
