寒山问拾得
The Inquiry of Hanshan to Shide
稽首文殊，寒山之士；
南无普贤，拾得定是。
Homage to Manjushri, the sage Hanshan; Reverence to Samantabhadra—surely, he is Shide reborn.
昔日寒山问拾得曰：世间有人谤我、欺我、辱我、笑我、轻我、贱我、恶我、骗我、如何处治乎？
拾得曰：只要忍他、让他、由他、避他、耐他、敬他、不要理他，再待几年你且看他。
Once, Hanshan asked Shide:
"In this world, if others slander me, deceive me, insult me, laugh at me, belittle me, despise me, hate me, or cheat me—how should I respond?"
Shide replied:
"Just endure them, yield to them, let them be, avoid them, bear with them, honor them, and ignore them. Wait a few years—and you shall see what becomes of them."
还有甚诀可以躲得？
"Is there no deeper method to transcend such troubles?
寒山云：还有甚诀可以躲得？
拾得云：我曾看过弥勒菩萨偈，你且听我念偈曰：
Hanshan then asked:
"Is there no deeper method to transcend such troubles?"
Shide answered:
"I once read the Gatha of Maitreya Bodhisattva. Listen as I recite it:"
老拙穿衲袄，淡饭腹中饱，
补破好遮寒，万事随缘了。
有人骂老拙，老拙只说好；
有人打老拙，老拙自睡倒；
涕唾在面上，随他自干了。
我也省力气，他也无烦恼；
这样波罗蜜，便是妙中宝。
若知这消息，何愁道不了。
人弱心不弱，人贫道不贫，
一心要修行，常在道中办。
Old fool dons a patched-up robe, eats plain rice till his belly is full, mends the torn to ward off cold, and leaves all things to the course of fate.
If someone scolds this foolish one, he simply says, ‘Well said, well done.’ If struck by fists, he lies and sleeps, if spat upon, he lets it dry on his face.
This way, I save my strength; he too has no worries: Such is the perfection of Paramita, a precious gem. If you but grasp this way, why fear the path will go astray?
Though the body be frail, the heart remains unshaken; though one is poor, the Way is never impoverished, with a single-minded will to cultivate, each day becomes a step upon the Path.
名利总成空，我心无足厌
Fame and gain always dissolve to emptiness, and my heart desires no more.
世人爱荣华，我却不待见；
名利总成空，我心无足厌；
堆金积如山，难买无常限。
子贡他能言，周公有神算，
孔明大智谋，樊哙救主难，
韩信功劳大，临死只一剑。
古今多少人，哪个活几千？
这个逞英雄，那个做好汉，
看看两鬓白，年年容颜变。
While worldly men chase wealth and fame, I find no joy in hollow names. Fame and gain always dissolve to emptiness, and my heart desires no more. Even gold piled like mountains cannot buy exemption from impermanence.
Zigong was eloquent, Duke Zhou, a master of divination, Zhuge Liang, wise beyond compare, Fan Kuai, bold in protecting his lord,
Han Xin, famed for his military merit— yet all met death at the tip of a single blade.
From ancient times to now, who has lived for a thousand years?
This one boasts as a hero, that one claims righteousness— yet grey creeps in as youth is shorn, each year the face is further worn.
劝君即回头，单把修行干
Turn back now. Devote yourself solely to cultivation.
日月穿梭织，光阴如射箭，
不久病来侵，低头暗嗟叹。
自想年少时，不把修行办，
得病想回头，阎王无转限，
三寸气断了，那时哪个辨？
也不论是非，也不把家辨，
也不争人我，也不做好汉；
骂着也不言，问着如哑汉，
打着也不理，推着浑身转，
也不怕人笑，也不做脸面，
儿女哭啼啼，再也不得见。
好个争名利，须把荒郊伴。
我看世上人，都是精扯淡，
劝君即回头，单把修行干。
做个大丈夫，一刀截两断，
跳出红火坑，做个清凉汉，
悟得长生理，日月为邻伴。
Sun and moon weave day and night, time flies past like arrows’ flight, soon, disease will find its way, and one can only bow the head and sigh in silence.
Looking back on youthful days— why did I not devote myself to practice? When sickness strikes, one wishes to turn back, but Yama allows no appeal. When three inches of breath are gone,
who can then discern right from wrong?
At that time, there is no more debate of right and wrong, no more concern for family matters, no more quarrels of self and others, no more striving to be the strong man.
Scolded—one stays silent. Questioned—like a mute. Struck—one does not retaliate. Pushed—one turns without resistance.
No fear of being mocked, no thought of saving face. Children cry and wail— but never again shall they meet you.
Ah, this struggle for fame and gain— only to die in the wilderness alone. I observe the world’s people, and all seems like cunning nonsense. So I urge you: turn back now. Devote yourself solely to cultivation.
Be a true person of resolve, cut through delusion with one clean stroke. Leap out of the blazing pit of desire, and live as one cool and clear. Awaken to the principle of eternal life, and let the sun and moon be your companions.
