We have already learned the song "World!" to about eighty percent proficiency, and we must continue until we master it completely. When I first sang this song, I happened to be sitting in a car, watching the scenery outside the window—trees receding backward, buildings receding backward, mountains and rivers flowing past before my eyes. As I sang this song, I was moved to tears streaming down my face.
Those who study Buddhism must cultivate their hearts to become increasingly sensitive, increasingly spiritually responsive. Gradually, we will be able to feel the hearts of sentient beings and, at the same time, achieve communion with the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas—a spiritual resonance with them. If our hearts remain numb and insensitive like bricks, it indicates that we are still very, very far from truly studying Buddhism.
The Lotus Sutra states that if a person digs a well and keeps digging, finding only dry soil, it indicates that water is still very far away. But if they dig up mud, and as they continue, the soil becomes increasingly moist—no longer dry soil but already mud—this shows that water is very close.
Our spiritual cultivation is the same: we must make our hearts increasingly soft and tender, so that reciting a single Buddha’s name moves us to tears. When thinking of our master, the heart gradually becomes peaceful and calm—this is excellent Buddhist practice.
When singing this song, dedicate the merit to all sentient beings, for this merit is profound. As you sing, I notice your bodies become cool and refreshing. Some people feel as if electricity is passing through their bodies—a tingling sensation. Others feel their hair standing on end. Some experience their bodies becoming very hot, as if about to perspire. These are all spiritual responses, all blessings, all manifestations of the inconceivable power of the Buddhas resonating with your hearts—the Buddha’s power has already entered your body and mind.
This song must be sung with deep feeling, so: "World!" Like an aria, one must master the rhythm well: "In Your embrace we live and die through countless lifetimes; Our joys and sorrows naturally dance upon Your body; You are our home, from ancient times until now, we forever cherish You!"

Though our recitation sounds pleasant, we haven’t sung it beautifully enough. We must sing it with true feeling for it to sound beautiful—only when genuine emotions flow forth, does it become truly beautiful. You see, do not speak of formlessness—the Buddha said that liberation from birth and death depends on formlessness, the true characteristics of all dharmas, which cannot be spoken or expressed, formless and flavorless. Yet even this song requires hand-by-hand instruction! The master must teach with complete devotion, pouring out his heart and soul, so that your singing can become like mine. The more it resembles mine, the greater the blessing power. As you sing, sing and sing—unknowingly, your eyes fill with tears. This is when the feeling is emerging. Singing with tears purifies body and mind, and one feels the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas descending, bestowing their blessings.
World, we live and die on your lap.
On you we experience all our woes and joys.
You are our ancestral home of old.
Forever we cherish and adore you.
We wish to transform you into the pure realm of our dreams.
We wish to transform you into a land for all creatures,
Equal for all and free of prejudice.
We wish to transform you into a loving, warm, and gentle goddess.
Our hope in you is so ever resolute.
So please be the ground on which we all may live
So all these wishes may come true,
So all these wishes may come true.
Do not show us the dark side of your character,
Where nature's calamities reign.
In every section of our world's land
May there thrive a fertile field of peace and joy,
Rich with the leaves and fruits of happiness,
Filled with the many sweet scents of freedom.
