修行的生命
一定是进步的
A Life of Cultivation is Invariably One of Progression
一年的天数就这么多,每过一天,它就减少一天。好在我们也会在时空中留下痕迹,会看到所做的事在慢慢地成办。就像种庄稼一样,只要你播种,它就会成长、会收获。
那作为修行人,我们把生命的重点放在修行上,就会有道业的增长,所以叫“身贫道不贫”。物质层面上可以保持着最低的限度,但是内在的精神世界,一定是丰裕的。师父悟公上人曾经也常常会自言自语地说,“有道无道,自己知道”。
所以,纵使人间依然有悲欢离合,世间有天灾人祸,但一个修行者的生命,一定是在进步的。这个进步表现在哪里呢?表现在生命的内在结构越来越完善、越来越和谐,身口意越来越清净,戒定慧越来越增上。讲得数据化一点,就是能量场是提升的。
自古以来,每一个佛弟子步入这条路之后,生命都是在升级的。这是由佛教自身的特点决定的,因为祂是走向觉悟的,是走解脱路的,是有生命彼岸、有终极圆满的方向的。
所以,无论轮回的世界多么无常,佛教总是那么安详宁静。而且不是一年、两年,祂已经静好了三千多年了,自从佛陀开出了这一条菩提大道,人间就有了这一方净土。三根普被,利钝全收,各种各样的人,都能被佛陀无边广大的愿力摄受。
所以,这也形成了鲜明的对比。对于世间生命来说,每过一天,生命就减少一天;但对于修行人而言,每过一天,修行的功德就更大一点,生命的边际就越来越拓宽,甚至最后变得“无量光无量寿”。
如果生命只意味着无常、逝去,我们拿什么纪念这二零二四年?对于修行人来说,不用纪念的,过去的岁月,就是生命里一条四维功德线,它就在那儿,抢也抢不掉。
有了佛法就这么神奇,这才是真正的“天增岁月人增寿”。什么叫寿?“死而不亡谓之寿”,有功德才叫寿。这是佛法跟世间极大的不同。
回归大道
是东方文明的选择
Returning to the Great Way: the choice of Eastern civilisations
古今中外,人们对世界的探索都不出“二加一”的范畴。“二”是指二元世界,“一”是大道的世界。只不过越远古的时候,越探讨“一”的问题。文艺复兴之后,尤其是十八世纪以来,“一”的部分就越来越少讲了。
那我们现在,整个人类社会就更侧重在数理化这个二元世界里;对于大道的世界、高度统一的真理的世界,往往是忽略的。
而我们佛弟子、修行人追求的,恰恰是这个“一”的部分。有了“一”,才有了生命的彼岸;有了“一”,才有了人类的文明。
中西方都在探索这个问题,说西方的哲学为什么能产生科学,能产生严谨逻辑,能产生当今的主流文明?东方为什么就产生不了?很多哲学家都困在这里。
如果没有弄清楚这个问题,我们就不会知道,中华民族五千年的文明,我们的文化自信是什么?我们自信的体系是什么?
事实上,东方文明不是不会玩数理化,我们“道生一,一生二,二生三,三生万物”,四象八卦、六十四卦,两千多爻,都是有的,甚至把时空都能纳在里面。我们的数学、天文、工巧明,在几千年的人类文明史上都没有差过,但为什么中国的发明家不往前发展了?
因为这些还是二元世界的,是“物”的层面,而中国人的价值认知,必定是皈依到“一”里的。我们老祖先说,人不能“玩物丧志”,“志”一定是回归大道。无论是政治、数学、天文、地理,所有的都是以“载道”为责任的。
所以,中国古人对科技是很谨慎的,不是中国人不具有这种聪明才智,不具备这种逻辑思维。中国人都懂的,只不过也看得到它的害处。就像历史一再证明的,人类的科技是进步了,但当科技演变成武器的时候,杀戮也一次大过一次,那么,人类的整体文明真的进步了吗?
所以,人类需要东方智慧,我们不能孤注一掷于二元世界。如果让中国历史再选择一次,我想,中华民族的智者们还是会选择这一条回归大道的东方文明之路。
找回文化自信
迎来生命的新生
Restoring Cultural Confidence, Welcoming Life Renewed
虽然大多数人都会陷在二元的世界里,但二元世界的数量再多,也抵不上一个一元世界的人。觉悟大道智慧的人再少数,他一个人也足以利益无量的众生。就像佛陀说,如果三千大千世界都是初地菩萨,加在一起,也无法思维一个二地菩萨的功德和事业。
正是因为这个原理,我们古人才会说“虽千万人,吾往矣”,纵然面对百千万人的阻止,我也要勇往直前。因为当百千万人都沉迷在二元世界的时候,一个觉悟一元世界的智者,他可以独步其中,不但不受影响,而且足以去影响别人。
所以,在人类历史上,会出现一个一个这样的智者,犹如群星灿烂般,或三百年或五百年,闪耀在历史的长空。
纵使一个菩萨来到人间,也按着世间的习惯生活,但他的生命不皈依在这里的,这不是他的归处。他的脚虽然踩在这个世界,但他的心依然在极乐世界。
所以,我们不要认为“二加一”的世界,“二”占绝大多数,就去鄙视“一”的力量。大道的力量是不可估量的,哪怕我们没有归入大道,我们还没有进入一元的世界,但是心向往之,这个向往的力量都足够大。
同时,我们也不能狭隘地认为,东方文明就一定在东方,西方文明就一定在西方。文明一定是属于尊重它的人。
整个人类都需要东西方这两种文明的整合,在二元昌盛的同时,我们需要一元的归属,成为我们的生命价值观。我们既可以享受着现代文明,也可以享受古老文明;不仅当下的生命是法喜禅悦的,同时还有极乐的归宿,这不矛盾的。
这样每个人肯定是“无挂碍故,无有恐怖,远离颠倒梦想”,那就是吉祥人生啊!这样的人生、家庭、社会,肯定是正能量的。
所以,时序轮转,这本身没什么意义,我们赋予时间空间什么意义,才是最重要的。我们不是在日历中寻得新生,新生一定是心灵上获得的。而且,我们已经值遇佛法了,要带着惭愧心好好去学。

Only through Inner Spiritual Awakening, can you Transcend to Nirvana
01.A Life of Cultivation is Invariably One of Progression
Each day subtracted from the calendar is a day deducted from a finite span. Happily, our passage through time and space leaves its trace: deeds gradually take shape just as crops do — like seed sown in a field, once planted it must sprout and bear fruit.
Therefore, if a practitioner makes cultivation the axis of his existence, the merit of the Way increases day by day — hence, we have the saying “The purse may be empty, yet the Way is never poor.” Outwardly we may live with the barest material needs, yet inwardly the spirit remains inexhaustibly rich. As my late master, Venerable Wugong, often murmured to himself, “Whether one has the Way or not—one alone knows.”
Thus, though the human life still dances to the sorrow of partings and the joy of reunions, though flood and fire vie with man‑made calamities, the life of one who cultivates is one of progress. How is that progress shown? By an inner architecture ever more integral and harmonious; by body, speech and mind ever purer and clarified; precepts, concentration and wisdom augmented. Put in modern terms, one’s very field of energy is uplifted.
From of old, every disciple of the Buddha who has set foot on this path has witnessed life transfigured, for Buddhism is a journey to awakening and enlightenment, a voyage towards the Nirvana.
However inconstant the cycle of rebirth may be, the Dharma abides serene and undisturbed. Not for a year or two, but for over three millennia the Tathāgata’s opened the broad Bodhi Way, establishing the Pure Land of the mind. With vows vast and measureless He gathers in all beings— quick or slow, keen or dull, none are excluded.
Thus, a striking contrast appears. In worldly existence each passing day diminishes life; for the practitioner every day enlarges merit, broadens the horizon of being, until in the end it becomes “Infinite Light, Infinite Life”.
If life meant only impermanence and decay, how should we commemorate the year 2024? For one who practises there is no need. Bygone days form a four‑dimensional thread of merit; it is simply there—no one can wrench it away.
Such is the wonder of the Dharma. This is the true meaning of the old blessing, “May Heaven increase your years and Man increase your longevity.” What is longevity? “To die and yet not perish—that is called longevity.” Only merit confers such true life. Here lies the great divergence between the Dharma and the world.
2. Returning to the Great Way: the choice of Eastern civilisations
Throughout history, explorations of reality have seldom strayed beyond the scope of “two plus one”. The “two” refers to the dualistic world of phenomena; the “one” to the realm of the Great Way. The more ancient the era, the more the inquiry inclined towards the “one”. Since the Renaissance period, and especially from the eighteenth century onwards, discourse on the “one” has steadily waned.
Today global society immerses itself in the dualistic sphere of mathematics, physics and chemistry—while the domain of the Great Way, of this supremely unified, ultimate truth, is largely brushed aside and ignored.
Yet, this is precisely this “One” that we, as Buddhist disciples, seek. Because with the One life gains the path of enlightenment; in possessing the “one”, humanity gains civilisation.
Why, scholars ask, did Western philosophy give birth to science, to rigorous logic and to the mainstream culture of our time, while the East seemingly did not? Many philosophers remain ensnared by this quandary.
Without clarifying it, we cannot understand the heart of the cultural self‑confidence inspired by five thousand years of Chinese civilisation. Wherein lies the system that supports this confidence?
In fact, Eastern civilisation has never been inept at numbers, patterns or science. Tradition declares: “The Way gives birth to the One; the One begets the Two; the Two begets the Three; and Three engenders the myriad of all things.” The four images, the eight trigrams, the sixty‑four hexagrams with their two thousand‑plus changing lines contain even time and space. Historically, in mathematics, astronomy and the mechanical arts China were never inferior. Why then did Eastern invention not drive relentlessly forward?
Chinese inventors did not pursue unbounded technological escalation, for such endeavours remain bound to the dualistic realm, to the domain of things, whereas Chinese value‑recognition must ultimately return to the One. Our elders warned against “being lost by over-indulging in things and losing aspiration”. That aspiration must return to the Great Way. Whether politics, mathematics, astronomy or geography, all were charged with “conveying the Way”.
Hence, the ancients treated technology with caution. It was not lack of intelligence or logical capacity, but because they foresaw its perils. History has repeatedly shown that each advance in technology adapts to create more effective weaponry, and each carnage surpasses the last. Has human civilisation has truly progressed?
Humanity needs Eastern wisdom; we cannot stake everything by betting upon the dualistic world. Were history to turn anew, I believe our sages would still choose the Eastern Road that returns to the Great Way.
3. Restoring Cultural Confidence, Welcoming Life Renewed
Though most people remain caught in duality, no multitude can outweigh a single being who dwells in the unity of the Way. Even if such fully awakened minds are few, one such person suffices to benefit countless beings. As the Buddha taught: should the three‑thousand‑fold cosmos be filled with first‑stage Bodhisattvas, their combined merit could not be conceived next to that of a single second‑stage Bodhisattva.
Because of this principle our forebears declared, “Though ten thousand stand in my path, I advance.” When millions are intoxicated by duality, a sage who awakens to the One and abides in Unity, walks unimpeded among them, untouched yet able to influence all.
Thus, throughout history, brilliant sages have appeared, glittering like stars across the vault of night, appearing every three to five centuries.
Even when a Bodhisattva descends to this world and lives outwardly in accord with its conventions, he does not make it his refuge, this is not his true home. Though his feet may tread this earth, his heart-mind abides in the Land of Bliss.
Let us not despise the power of the One simply because the Two seems to dominate. The power of the Great Way is beyond reckoning. Even if we have not yet entered Unity, our earnest longing for it already carries immense strength.
Likewise, civilisation is not confined by geography. Eastern wisdom is not limited to the East, nor Western culture to the West. Civilisation belongs to whoever lives it and honours it.
Present‑day humanity must integrate the two traditions of East and West. While the dualistic realm prospers, we need the refuge of the One to ground our values of life. We may enjoy the comforts of modernity and cherish the riches of ancient wisdom; dwell in Dharma‑joy and meditative delight in the present life, and be assured of the Pure Land hereafter. There is no contradiction.
Thus, each person is “without mental obstruction, without fear, far from inverted dreams”—a life truly auspicious. Families, societies, and all life radiates fields of positive energy.
The turning of the seasons itself has no meaning; what matters is the meaning we confer upon time and space. New birth is not found in a calendar but in the awakening of the heart-mind. We have already encountered the Dharma — the pinnacle of the human inheritance—we must learn it well, with the humility it deserves.
In this New Year, may each of you regain cultural confidence and welcome the rebirth of your lives, with inner Spiritual Awakening.
