Since we have entered the monastic life, we should practice to perfect ‘the monastic appearance.’
Some may wonder: Now that we’ve shaved our heads and donned these robes, haven’t we already taken on the appearance of a monastic?
But what exactly is meant by the monastic appearance?
It refers to the ability to contemplate and reflect, enabling you to restrain yourself, particularly in subduing your gross afflictions—greed, hatred, and ignorance. It means not being defiled by them and also preventing them from defiling others.
This is just the initial step, the most basic one.
The second step requires further cultivation, and we are called to let kindness, compassion, joy, and giving pervade our entire being. These should guide our interactions with all beings, allowing us to offer them support and serve as a luminous example to the world.
Once we shave our heads—whether freshly ordained or still “name-only” novices—we become the public face of the Three Jewels. Internally, we must switch off the engine of greed, hatred and stupidity; externally, we should ‘refurbish the temple-front’, embodying kindness, compassion, joy, and giving, and ‘fling open the gates for business’, engaging with the world and fulfill our monastic role.
